District chiefs go high-tech with SMS alerts

BANGKOK: -- The days of district chiefs being isolated in their remote communities is over, with the introduction of a text message news service which will link district officials with central government.

Announced today by Mr. Siwa Sangmanee, the Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, the SMS news alert service represents an effort to pull local administration into the high-tech world, and ensure better links between central and local government offices.

Under the scheme, district chiefs and their deputies will be issued with mobile phones to gain regular information updates.

"We've ordered all district chiefs, deputy chiefs and the heads of sub-districts to send text messages three times every day, or when urgent situations occur in order to ensure government administration that is accurate, quick and effective", Mr. Siwa said.

"This will also give another channel for control, order, supervision, coordination and the dissemination of news", he added.
