Is anyone else unschooling their child/ children? and are there any "groups"?

Anyone interested in forming or joining a group? in BKK or somewhere else?

If you haven't already been in touch with the Bangkok Area Homeschoolers Network, that would be a good place to start. They have a yahoo group now that you can join to get in touch with people. This is the link to join the yahoo group.

I am reading a lot about unschooling and I like it very much. My son is still young though.

In my home country unschooling is illegal, here in Thailand there don't seem to be many unschoolers, hopefully there will be more soon.

One couple in Phuket are unschooling their two daughters, but they are moving away now.

I am interested in forming an unschooling group in Phuket.

At first glance there appears little interest in home education in Thailand. For the state school the homogenous Thai society accepts the national identity through the office of the King that is prevalent in the schools. At the same time the students do not fail although there appears little value in qualifications obtained at university. Some I know with degrees have obtained local employment as waitresses, and I help two degreed students with English, one working in tourism with an unused computer degree and one unemployed with food science.

As for expats most relate to the private schools especially in Bangkok. These schools have embraced the exams approach, and that is how they sell themselves. Basically their students go on to higher education in the west, and that appears to be the measure of success most parents want.

The other major raison d'etre in the west for homeschooling is bullying. This is a reflection of the bullying ethic that dominates those societies, and whilst some would argue that bullying is significant in Thai society (recently the Reds in Bangkok and the ongoing issue around Muslims in the South, for most people Thailand is peaceful and Thais are proud of that. I don't believe bullying is a serious problem in state schools, and I certainly don't think it is a problem in private schools. It certainly appears that the issue is not strong enough to warrant home education. But I am making these judgements as an outsider, and would like to know to the contrary.

As for unschooling Thailand is perhaps a worse situation than in the west. The choice is between Thai schools of a national character and dubious exams and expat schools where education as self-realisation is not generally considered and where education and exam passes are equivalent. Where students would obtain self-realisation, autonomy or mastery is very difficult to decide?
