Tourists and trawlers warned to avoid Andaman Sea until October

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Fisheries has warned tourists and trawlers to avoid all activities in the Andaman Sea until October due to high waves and strong wind, or even storms, during the rainy season.

"Normally tourists and small trawlers should avoid all marine activities during the rainy season, including diving, cruising and fishing, as there are high waves, strong wind, and even storms in the sea", the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, Jaranthada Karnasuta, told TNA today.

"All marine activities should particularly be avoided in the Andaman Sea", he added.

Mr. Jaranthada suggested that tourists and trawlers resume their marine activities in November when the sea is safe.

His advice followed an accident off Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket earlier this week when a tourist boat capsized, killing one tourist, while the rest 18 were safely rescued by naval officers.

It is very different from year to year.

I dont believe they would suggest this unless they believed there was a clear danger. Remember tourism and fishing are two of the most important components of the Southern economy.

Long range forecasting of tropical monsoonal areas is not available yet (and possibly will never be) so what I meant was ,that to give a blanket warning not to engage in fishing or water based tourism activities in a tourist and fishing area for 6 months seems a bit over the top. I feel sure the people engaged in these fields would give a different view.
