Local elections planned for 31 July

BANGKOK: -- The Interior Ministry confirmed today that local elections would go ahead on 31 July despite continuing fears over the security situation in Thailand's southern border region.

The nationwide elections will come over a month after several local officials come to the end of their term of office, a delay largely due to the country's southern insurgency.

Today Mr. Sujarit Patchimnun, the Permanent Secretary for Interior, confirmed that the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) had set 31 July as the election date, and called on provincial governors to work with the EC to ensure the safety of voters and the security of ballot boxes, ballot papers and other election-related equipment.
