The move comes as political violence spreads in Bangkok, where a Canadian journalist has been seriously wounded in the rioting.

The Department Foreign Affairs says all consular emergency situations are still being addressed.

The U.S., British and Japanese embassies have also been closed.

Earlier, Thai troops fired bullets at anti-government protesters and explosions thundered in the heart of the city as the army pushed to end a two-month political standoff.

The violence has killed three people and wounded 69, including Canadian freelance journalist Nelson Rand, who was working for the France 24 news channel.

The channel says Rand has been shot three times and is in "very serious" condition.

Ottawa has advised against non-essential travel to and within Bangkok due to the unrest.
