More Bloodshed In Bangkok As Red Siege Continues

The Reds called on the king to intervene, saying he was the "only hope" for an end to the two-month-old crisis, which has left 63 people dead and about 1,700 wounded, including 25 fatalities in a failed army crackdown on April 10.

"I believe Thais will feel the same, that His Majesty is our only hope," Jatuporn Prompan told reporters at the rally site, where thousands of protesters were camped.

Nation

theres no need to call on anyone let alone his majesty

just pack up and go home

you are law breakers, criminals and some amongst you by UN definition are terrorists

why would a man who has worked his whole life to set a fine example to his people, stoop so low as to bail you out of a mess of your own creation?

you should at best be scorned by all colors for even asking and if i had my way you would be shot for treason.....

At the Dusit Thani hotel, which overlooks the Reds' encampment, guests evacuated their rooms and rushed to the basement as staff warned them the hotel was under attack, according to an AFP journalist inside.

"I was in bed. There was a big explosion very close to my room. I went out of the room, other people did too and at that moment the wall outside was hit by bullets," said AFP photographer Pedro Ugarte.

"Everybody is now in the basement, about 100 people," he said by telephone.

It was unclear where the shooting came from.

without putting too fine a point on the reporting skills of an AFP quoted employee,

i doubt the Army would be turning 180 degrees and firing behind them at the hotel with grenades and rifles

especially as the red menace were directly in front of them firing at them

where do they get these western press idiots from?

why do they not just come straight out and say it?

the western press treat it like a dirty little secret

the red are armed to the teeth with stolen M16 rifles, Thaksin paid for AK47's and M79 grenades

the truth is that, the army was EXCHANGING gunfire with the red terrorists

where is Kate Adie when you need her?

Exactly. Just what is the deal with AFP, CNN, BBC and others? If you weren't actually here, and didn't know the truth, you might actually believe this was all about democracy and NOT all about Thaksin. Poor innocent unarmed protesters my arse

If we could just turn back the clock to pre-coup times. The coup has brought nothing but chaos.

i've said that many times too. love or hate taksin, i think everyone agrees Thailand was a lot better before the coup. the coup was totally unnecessary, a major overreaction to a corrupt politician, and has created a class war.

the most disturbing thing now is that Abhisit seems unwilling to compromise at all. according to CNN this morning :

Minutes later, the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, or UDD, also known as the Red Shirts, said it was willing to negotiate an end to the unrest if troops move out of the area where protesters have amassed by the thousands for weeks.

"We ask the government to ... withdraw troops out of surrounding area," said Natthawut Saikua of the UDD. "We are ready to enter talks immediately by having the United Nations as mediator for this negotiation."

However, the government seemed disinclined to have the United Nations mediate.

Panitan said in the news conference the Thai government has a policy of not allowing organizations to intervene in its internal affairs. The government has its own sovereignty, Panitan said, and can resolve its own problems.

i think without outside intervention, Thailand is screwed at this point

I think CNN is moving further and further from the truth and you certainly shouldn't believe everything they say. Their man on the spot, Dan Rivers, seems to be getting redder by the day and his reports come down very much in favour of protesters. His most recent pieces all show army firing weapons and 'innocent' reds firing back with rockets and sling shots. He still denies that the reds have weapons. He described Weng as a moderate when clearly he is one of the original hardcore leaders. He does not mention the Thaksin factor and presents this as the elite and their army crushing a peaceful demonstration. Way off the mark from CNN and Rivers.

I gotta agree with you and BBC is pretty much just as bad

They are just reporting what they think people might watch

as opposed to reporting the facts behind the riots.

They keep saying that reds are supporters of TS

yet never seem to mention is a convicted person who

has fled Thailand? and on and on .......

Fail to mention reds balked twice during negotiations.

Fail to mentioned proposed road map that all sides were

on favor of, then reds balked at 11th hour

I guess the truth does not make good viewing on CNN

Blue Unicorn

But the other side have not. Not once have they compromised or shown their democratic face. Why ? Because they are not about democracy. Why ? Because Thaksin was never about deomocracy . Hitler once said....the bigger the lie, the more people believe it.....and he was right.

A wonderful comment and right on target. looking at the list of the 106 people whose financial matters are subject to restrictions it is indeed wonderful to see how many are ''THE ELITE.''

The terrorists named on this list for that is what they are nothing more nothing less should have their funds and assets confiscated as there is no doubt that said funds have not been amassed legally as we who live here all know.

Those revolutionairies that are absent from the country should be barred from re-entering the country or if attempting to re-enter the country arrested and imprisoned to enable full investigations to progress regarding their role in the attempted overthrow of a government and the installation of a dictatorship.

Those that hold passports from other countries as well as Thai passports should be regarded as nationals of the second or third passport issuing country and thus be declared ''Persona Non Gratia'' in Thailand and their Thai citizenship revoked.

The confiscated assets and monies must be returned to the exchequer and used to pay for the damage to both public and private property and to also cover the medical bills of the injured and their long term support if it is needed and to provide a death grant of at least one million baht for those killed in this protest no matter what presumed side that they may have been on.

However one looks at it the people who have started this appalling trail of carnage and destruction are the Red Shirt Brigade, despite endless compromises they (the Red Shirt Brigade (mis)leadership) have constantly moved the goalposts at the behest of their puppet master Thaksin who manipulates from the utter safety of a third world corrupt European nation where of course Thaksin is completely at home !!

Not taking any sides, but I certainly can't ever recall BBC or CNN taking the conservative side in any situation...whether that be backing a current administration or supporting big business. Both networks seem to take the Robin Hood stance upon their viewpoints/coverage. A manufacturer could be producing medical devices to save lives and these networks would be talking about the mistreatment of its employees or byproduct waste produced rather than the greater good.

This is it. This is the "FINAL BATTLE" that Thaksin and his red "leaders" tried to precipitate last April in Bangkok, but failed then, as the Reds weren't wound up enough to really sacrifice either themselves or the city of BKK for his cause. But 2 months of constant hate-filled rhetoric rallies against the govt, the weapons they've amassed and the feeling of power they got from controlling the heart of BKK has now done its job of pushing the Red mob over the edge.

Make no mistake........the burning tyres, the scenes of "protesters" firing slingshots against the army, the firecrackers, the Red banners, all of it you see on the news.......... is a carefully orchestrated plan by Thaksin and his cohorts to create anarchy, pandemonium, death, destruction and eventually a power vacuum for him and his family to return and control Thailand once more. Now his newly hired, top dollar lawyer, Richard Amsterdam, has arrived on the scene and is giving interviews to the press, the scene is complete. Thaksin wants back, wants revenge and wants every last satang of his stinking, corrupt lucre back in his greasy palms. He's prepared to push Thailand to the brink of civil war to get it. It may already be near that point. The vulture of the Lord of Darkness is circling the fires of Rama 4 and Pratunam and scents money and power in the black, acrid air before him.

The future of Thailand will be decided in the next few days.

Incorrect and has been proved many many times

you do not listen

If you want to get to the beginning you need to go back to when Thaskin took power

and stop the curruption taking place that caused the coup

Stop blaming the solution for trying to fix the origional cause

But as we can see you are part of the red shirt collective

Resistance is futile. You have been assimilated, and all your code will serve the collective

It was the "my maid and gardener own 10% of the Thai stockmarket, and I neglected to notice that I should have told you", that started all of this.

That was probably the first bit of publical shonkiness associated with TRT and more fool the system, he got away with it. Beyond that, 97 was the start of the "new business" people having little or no faith in the Democratic party or the dinosaur local overlord politicians to represent their interests nationally and globally, so something had to be done to make sure that a debacle like 97 never happened again.

THaksin has brought nothing but chaos. Turn back the clock to pre-Thaksin times. Thaksin and his greedy, narrow-minded and power hungry actions brought on that coup.

This current situation is the best illustration of why that coup was justified.

Ahbist has made this situation much worst than it had to be. They could have made a deal - more money, elections, whatever. Ahbist stopped negotiations, not the reds.

Instead, army with live ammo chasing motorcycle taxi drivers around and killing them. Unbelieveably stupid - will turn Bangkok into Beiruit.

Ahbist should resign now. Take that idiot Korn with you. BTW - I don't think they will be able to vacaton in Europe or the US anymore. Killing rice farmers does not go down well there.

Hope all you hard-liners enjoy your new Thailand.

Abhsit gave them elections already. The Reds refused!!!!

The Red leadership disagreed. They was a split. Those who supported the reelection left the movement.

Thaksin didn't agree with the reelection! So he ordered his proxies to turn it down.

I seem to recollect the 3 stooges walking away from the negotiations after first 2 meetings..... was not Abhisit that walked away.

I seem to recollect that 2 weeks ago, there was a roadmap offered and the reds pretended to accept, tried to re-write the terms to their own suiting but failed to put anything together. Abhisit waited a week without an official acceptance, rally didn't end, when it could all have all been over. That was not Abhisit walking away.

In the meantime, there were numerous M79 attacks on the public. That was not Abhisit wlking away, he showed restraint and patience.

Let's offer another perspective on this opinion: "Abhisit would not be welcome in Europe":......... The rest of the world ahs seen these guys in on the red stage, speaking with anger, unwilling to negotiate with any ciompromise to their hardline position....... the rest of the world would never accept them as leaders if they were to be put in place as Thailand's MP's. That's a fact.

There is only 1 leader

Thaskin

and he wants Chaos

he wants thousands of innocents people to die

he want war in the streets

Then and only then he can return as a hero

and save all the people

then rape the country financially

Its called Revenge

Your english is terrible, but you get the point. I'm glad you posted. The very guy they fight for, will steal from them later. Once a thief, always a thief. I still can't understand why people are laying down their life for this criminal.

Also, please don't tell me this is democracy. Anyone that thinks that is very naieve. This is all about Thaksin and his money.

There are perhaps 2 million Red sympathizers in BKK and 15 million in the country. These Reds are no more terrorist than the yellows. In any bunch there are a few bad apples.

The problem is that the decent redshirts have quit and the bad apples are now in charge!

Remind us again, Ulysses, which were the "decent apples" in the Redshirts?

I've noticed you've had a conversion on the Road to Damascus somewhere along the lines. Took a while, admittedly, but eventually even you realised they were not the democracy-loving, poor-protecting, peaceful bunch of "protesters", they have been claiming to the media all along. The belly of the beast is now out there for all to see and it's got a T written all over it. :)

it takes a good man to admit he was wrong about some things

i for one applaud UG for being man enough to say it out loud
