The key red-shirt leaders have taken the red-shirt stage and called for an end to the red-shirt rally to put an end to the deaths and injuries.

But reiterated that the 'fight' of the red-shirt movement will not stop, adding that the 'fight' will be carried on via democratic means.

Jatuporn pleading with his red shirts to end protest

Around 1.15 pm, red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan appeared on the rally stage making a passionate plea for the red shirts to end protesting at Rajprasong to avoid further loss of life.

"Please understand and I know you all knew I will never abandon you but it is now time to avoid more lives lost because it's our red shirts who got killed," he said.

Jatuporn vowed never to abandon the red shirts nor their political ideology but argued that he would sacrifice himself in order to save lives of the red shirts.

Red-shirt leader Natthawut Saikua said as their leader, the red shirts must now end their rally.

"I can no longer tolerate the cruelty inflicted on us, the red shirts," he said.

Natthawut said the red shirts should conserve their energy and determination in order to fight another day.

Agreed. Some of the rubbish and <deleted> the red supporters have been posting is amazing. They are completely biased and need to take their blinkers off. It's fantastic that the government have finally stopped the reds committing their violence and killing innocent people with their guns, grenades and petrol bombs.

It had to happen sooner or later. Now I hope for two things: Firstly minimal casulties on both sides. And secondly for Abhisit to to go through with his roadmap inclusive early election plans instead of abusing a successful crackdown to suppress the opposition. What we need is real reconciliation. Without concessions to all the moderate red supporters in the provinces, i fear, it won't take long before more of them are radicalized.

You're nicer than I. I can see Abhisit going through with his 'roadmap' ....but he should not feel compelled to go ahead with early elections. The Reds had that option - wide open - but shunted it rudely. Early elections have not been on the negotiating table for a week. Thaksin and the Reds gambled and lost. Abhisit should go ahead and have elections at the end of 2011. And all expenses for dealing with the rallies/riots should be borne by T, and members of his friends and family who sponsored it.

Thaksin always gets the blame for for this peacefull rally, he is just a puppet in this somewhere to shovel the blame to so as not to see where it really lies.

I was referring to a quote made today on CNN by a professor at Chulakorn University.

The interview of this professor was indeed very good. I am trying to spot it in the CNN website but I can't. I wanted to post it here. I think that the Reds will not stop and although I do not think that separatism movements will emerge I am not at all sure that we have seen the last act of this drama. We see today a major act but I am sure that it will not end. I see two possible outcomes in the long run: 1. The Reds are disorganised and the current government can pass it's agenda and do whatever they want. 2. The Reds learn from their mistakes (use violence to respond to violent government) and they find new means to fight.

The "Reds" have no political program whatsoever -- they have never expressed a political path to anywhere so don't wait for them to offer solutions. This is another in a long list of wakeup calls for the Thai style of government -- and amazingly enough, it's ringing with a PM in power who actually might respond to the call. Thailand needs change, but it has to be slow and sure, not by riot or insurgency. That hardens those who have power and don't want to give it up. The unfortunate thing is that the Dems will lose the next election and we'll have a new round of Kleptocrats come to power

Red-shirt Leaders Turn Themselves in at National Police Office

UPDATE : 19 May 2010

Key red-shirt leaders including Jatuporn Promphan, Nutthawut Saigua, and Kwanchai Praiphana have turned themselves in at the National Police Office.

They were accompanied upstairs by Police General Adul Saengsingkaew.

He declined to comment if the leaders will be granted bail.
