I was talking to a Thai today who I know reasonably well. Seems she was very concerned at stopped by the police last night. Said police were running checks on many people 1 1/2 hours before curfew. She tells me the reason she was worried is because her ID card shows an affiliation to the Red Shirt party and Thaksin himself had something to do with her acquiring this particular ID card. She was married to a Red Shirt politician for over 10 years until he died. Knowing the current level of feeling amongst a lot of people adds to her concern.

My question is, is this correct, that some ID cards do show affiliation to certain political parties? Seems an odd situation to me as I am of the belief ID cards are there for ID purposes only. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Please do not turn this into a RED v other colour debate. That is not the point of the post.

Maybe she is getting confused with her party membership card. Or that she still has the red politicians last name. If she is so worried get a new card.

Maybe she has a red party sticker on it and can't figure out how to remove it?

Either get a new card or cover the front of the card with a precisely cut to size piece of duct tape.

THere is more information on the card than is printed. I am aware that some concession type information such as disability and I believe occupation are encoded.

Thats only the new ones, the older ones dont have a microchip yet, i made mine in '08-no chip.

Perhaps a connection with the family name could connect to the Pheua Thai Part, Thaksins allies/extended family, etc.
