British tourist survives cliff fall

KOH SAMUI: -- A British tourist survived a fall from a cliff at Nai Waterfall on Koh Samui on Friday.

Police said the victim, David Grabham, 19, was found badly injured in a group of rocks about ten metres below the top of the cliff.

A rescue team had to tie his body into a first-aid cradle and carry him from the scene by foot because he couldn’t move. The rescue process took more than two hours.

X-rays later showed Grabham had broken both hips.

He told Koh Samui police that he was visiting Nai Waterfall with three friends. While enjoying the beautiful scenery at the top of the waterfall, he had slipped and fallen.

Grabham said he appreciated the kindness and help of the Thai people – especially the rescue team and nurses – and when he went home he would recommend that his family and friends visit Koh Samui.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Region Five director Pramote Sapyen said there were warning signs at the waterfall, but some tourists took no notice. He would instruct officers to take better care of tourists visiting the waterfall.

Considering this waterfall in question, he's a very lucky young man to still be breathing. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and let others beware: Waterfalls can be a dangerous place.

"Be careful out there":

Been up there, yes the scenery is breathtaking and also fatal if one is not careful. Hope this bloke speedy recovery.

He must already be in pretty good shape if the second thing he actually said was how much he 'appreciated the kindness and help of the Thai people.'

Even in a short and completely prosaic news report of a foreigner's near tragic accident, these people have to push themselves up front and self-administer a on the back for being such wonderful folks. Good Lord.....

Of course, everyone knows that in any other country he would have been left to die. :o
