Richard W
I'd like to have the 26 English letter sounds (not the letter names) written in Thai. Is it possible? Could someone help please? For example; a เอ อา b บี บะ c ซี คึ Well, omitting digraphs (which are important) and unusual pronunciations: a แอ็ อา เอ b บ c ค ซ d ด e เอ็ อี f ฟ g ก จ (nearest Thai approximations) h ฮ i อิ อี อาย j จ (nearest Thai approximation) k ค l ล m ม n น o อ็อ อั (before 'n', sometimes 'm', and after /w/) ออ (some accents) โอ p พ q ค คว (e.g. Qantas) r ร s ซ (/z/ pronunciation has no Thai equivalent) t ท u อั อุ อิว อู (after accent-specific consonants) ยุ เยอ็อ (unstressed) v (unpronounceable - ฟ or ว substituted) w ว x กซ (two different English pronunciations, indistinguishable in Thai phonlogy), (also unpronounceable when initial, - ซ substituted) y ย อิ อี อาย z (unpronounceable - ซ substituted) After w, also: a อ็อ ออ ฺำBefore r: a แอ e เอีย i ไอเออะ o ออ u ยูเออะ / เยอ (passable substitute) y (as 'i') ฺำBefore r, in some rhotic accents: a อา แอ e เออ/เอิ (passable substitute) เอีย i เออ/เอิ (passable substitute) ไอเออะ o ออ u เออ/เอิ (passable substitute) ยูเออะ y (as 'i') Also, most vowels may be slurred to stress-reduced อะ or เออะ. LivinLOS
Exactly this, along with a memorisation system that actually worked for me, is in the ebook 'Read Thai in a day'.. I have no connection to them other than being a very happy customer. I am only starting out, but I tried all kind of other systems without much success, and this really is putting the letter = sound in there fast.
