Name Changing

Featured Replies

My wife has been in the uk on a spouse visa for 16 months. When we got married in bkk she did not change her surname but she would like to now. Her passport runs out around the time of ILR application and we will put the stamp in a new passport. Can anyone advise on procedure to change her name please? I dont know if you can do it from the uk or if it will confuse visa's etc.Would it be better to wait for ILR?

I'm fairly certain that she can change the name in her passport at the Thai embassy in London, but I'm not sure if they will do so unless she has already changed her ID card and she can only do that in Thailand.

If she does change the name in her passport when she renews it, this will not cause a problem with her ILR as your marriage certificate provides the link.

You say that he passport expires "around the time of ILR application" so make sure that she applies for a new one early enough so she has the new one back in time to submit her ILR application. She can apply for a new passport before the old one expires.

Yes but how do you change name? That has to be done in bk I presume.

^ It's an easy process to change the name back in Thailand at her local Amphur, they'll give her an new ID card within minutes. But, as 7by7 says, this probably can't be done at the London Embassy.

My wife got her ID changed and then went to the passport office in Chiang Mai submitted her old passport and showed new ID name and got new passport. Easy in Thailand but I'm not sure about England. Sorry I can't be of more help.
