Printer That Can Be Refilled Cheaply (And Easily)

Featured Replies

Advising a friend about which Printer to get. Would like to get one that one can buy refills easily (preferably non-genuine plug and play cartridges) without doing open-heart surgery on the thing. Printing needs are basic web pages, text, pdf forms. Ideally a current/new one that can be picked up locally from BigC/Tesco/Bannana IT. Had a look at the print shop near Tesco but the modified Canon's look like trouble unless you're doing serious colour printing.

I bought an Epson all-in-one jobbie from Tesco for I think 2000 baht, but a full set of cartridges cost near enough same price as the printer, shops tell me cartridges are security encoded, dont want others to make same mistake.

Note to mod: Localised to Samui as we only have a small selection of new printer vendors, and only a small number of refills shops, should be much easier in the BKK etc..

Inkworld ! just before you get to Thai International hospital. Either past Makro and turn left before Tesco or past Tesco and turn right and just on your left. A Canon printer / copier / scanner etc with the external ink pots a bargain. Works a treat and is VERY cost efficient,

I seen that Canon but that solutions looks problematic(and one I wouldn't want to support for a novice), especially if just printing a black/white mainly and colour pages now and again.

Which printer do you have that can refill 100 baht cartridges?

HP Deskjet F5185, bought in Makro.

Just bought a HP Deskjet 2480 myself - on offer at Tescos for 1990. It has a 'Solutions Center' which won't load off the disc and the patches and stuff sound a nightmare!

Despite this it prints very well, no problems there, but to scan you have to go through Windows Paint, and the copying is fine too. So I guess it is 'talking' to my laptop. I think the only bit of the Solutions Center I am missing is the ink levels indicator, test pages and troubleshooting. Couldn't be ar#ed to take it back and try and explain the problem.

Am hopeful Inkworld will be able to fill the cartridges too.

Hi - I've had this problem for years now. All I ever need to print is a couple of dozen B/W pages of text every month. Epson, Canon and HP are now all security tagging their ink cartridges so re-filled ones can't be used.

Another problem is that some printers I have tried won't work at all if just one of the (4) cartridges is empty!

There ARE ways round this - if you want to spend a few days on Google (as I once did)there are entire forums dedicated to hacking this cartridge problem, but it requires a lot of time and messing about.

Another problem is that, like you, I can't justify the expense of having a printer with an external multi-tank set-up.

Refill the cartridge for 100B? Firstly that's not the problem - as when done 809% of the printers today won't accept the refilled cartridge. Second, after a couple of refills, the cartridge clogs and is useless.

The older printers don't have this problem and go on for ever - but this is Samui and not Pataya or BKK and the chances of finding a used older printer are non-existent.

I have been using the bottom-end Lexmark with success for a while. The model # is part of the Z600 series and they work fine with refills. This is about 1,200 baht or so to buy, but mine is 2 years old now so I don't know if the current models work with refills.

On the other hand, I DO have an old Canon BJC 4000 that works with refills, as I recall. Can't remember why I stopped using it but it's free if you want to take it away and try. I don't know if I still have the cables, but I'm sure I can find something. (It'll be dirty dirty dirty as it's been under the bed for 2 years - FREE to you so you can clean the dam_n thing out!!)

I live in Mae Nam, BTW. Message me and we'll sort something.

I bought a Canon MFP MX328 from BananaIT and it costs me next to nothing at Inkworld to refill it. It's a great little printer.

Bridge on here also bought one with the same intention of a cheap refill at inkworld! :)

Matt.
