Dutchman gets 10 years for Cambodian underage sex

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia's appeals court sentenced a 49-year-old Dutchman to 10 years in jail on Tuesday for having sex with shoe-shine street children aged between 12 and 15 years old.

Rene Paul Martin Aubel, the latest foreigner to be convicted in an apparent crackdown on child sex tourists, was charged with debauchery after being arrested in a Phnom Penh hotel in the company of several young boys in April last year.

He was found not guilty at his initial trial but was held in custody while prosecutors launched an appeal.

Several of the children testified against Aubel at Tuesday's hearing, saying he paid $10 (5.5 pounds) to have sex with them.

"According to the testimony of the children and the pictures we confiscated, these are enough evidence," presiding Judge Thou Mony told a packed court room.

Aubel, who had travelled to the impoverished southeast Asian nation on a tourist visa, denied any wrongdoing and said he would appeal his conviction.

The court also ordered him to pay 1 million riel (or $256) to each of his six victims.

Stephanie Remion of child rights group Action Pour Les Enfants said the verdict, the latest in several convictions, suggested Cambodia was finally getting serious about tackling its reputation as a haven for Western paedophiles.

"People who abuse children must be imprisoned," she said.

These guys should do the full term also, then sent back to their own countries and have their Passports confiscated.

There are too may people in the world that are willing to exploit the financial situation of others, those that do so for sexual purposes need to be controlled and deterred.

I hope this case has had a big coverage in Europe.
