What do you get for these? The 2nd has confused me a little

36/3 -2 (8+2) +5 =

[-3(-17+2)-25] (10-3+15-10)=

4

The square brackets above should take in the "all over 4" as well.

You've not followed the normal convention for the expressions, but as given the first = -3 and the second +60.

I know I should have something better to do, but I'm puzzled by your answer to the first equation. I can read it two ways:-

((36/3)-2)(8+2)+5 = 105

(36/3-2)(8+2)+5 = 365

How do you get -3 ?

Please explain or I won't get any sleep tonight.

Edit: Forget it, I've just seen where you got it from. (36/2)(-2(8+2))+5 = -3

Wife's at work.

I've got little else to do right now  .

This is what I made of the equations, as in the attachment.

But bracketting can change the whole thing into something completely different, as Chickenlegs has done.

Brackets: (8+2) =10

Division: 36/3 =12

Multiplication 2*(10) =20

Addition / Subtraction: 12-20+5 =-3
