Omega 3 And Dha In Everything

Featured Replies

As a father one of my duties is shopping for food for the family including my son.

I have noticed over the last year or so that every product out there from milk, juice and eggs that are aimed at kids it seems has Omega 3 and DHA etc inside.

Now I have taken the time to do a little research on Omega 3 and how it's important to have it come from cold water fish (less mercury apparently).

However, I can't tell (and neither can my Thai wife) the source of these 'supplements' in the local food products.

Any suggestions? I am sure the FDA regulates this but Omega 3 has always been a grey area in the west so I assume it is charcoal here.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Becareful with over use with omega 3 fish oil, Omega 3 and omega 6 need to be given in a ratio of 4-1. Check out a website BodyBio about these oils. As with many things diartary the hype is over done.

Agree with the above. Depending on your diet, Omega-6 supplementation can often be problematic. For us, I don't buy anything that has been fortified with Omega-3 or DHA. Rather, I add ground flaxseed to things, which is a good source of natural Omega-3, and just a tablespoon or so every now and then-- so no unnaturally high doses. All of the fish oils and other DHA supplemented foods here I have found are either not labelled at all or not clearly labelled with regard to the source of the DHA.

In the past, I also used a vegan DHA supplement, which is derived from algae (direct from the source, as opposed to from fish-- similar to getting your calcium from green leafy vegetables as opposed to dairy). I had to order this from overseas as I was unable to find any vegan DHA options here, but don't do it right now as it got a little pricey for us.
