I'm a Canadian woman who moved to Bangkok (I live in Salaya) very recently, and I'd like to join some kind of expat association so I can meet folks here. I hope to be more involved in my local community eventually, but right now, I don't speak any Thai, but I'd still like to make some friends. I don't know where to begin to look. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions?

First of all - and most important, what part of Canada do you hail from?

2ndly, check out the Ladies forum on here.

I'm from Calgary. I'll check out the Ladies forum, but I'm not exclusively looking for a relationship, just to make friends.

If you are here on business you might want to join the Canadian / American / Australian / British Chambers of Commerce, then there are groups like the Bangkok / Eurpoean Young Professionals etc. All of which have social networking nights which are great ways to make friends. Also try sports clubs like the Southerners Sports Club (u dont need to be an Aussie Kiwi or South African, just to tolerate them :)) or the British Club etc.

I'm not sure. Does teaching at a university count as business? I know it wouldn't count at home.

As long as you pay your fees, you can call it whatever you want.

You can also try this:

I have not been able to attend, as I am now in Pattaya...but might be worth a try.

Also, attend some the embassy events. I have also met many really nice people here on TV. Just this week went to a concert with somebody I met. We had a great time and will get together again for sure. Initially met this person at the local TV get together....

Best of luck! I have met more friends here in Thailand than I have back in the US.

Edit: And maybe this???

I'll try those, but what's a TV get-together?

Yes I was just going to post the link. I joined American expats and made at least one meeting it was lot of fun for me and the family and nice to associate with some of my own culture, people who actually understand my sense of humor and can relate to the culture we come from..

Actually the link is a bit different so I'll post it anyway, but certain it is the same group..

JFYI I don't think there is any requirement to be Canadian or American to join the group of either nationality..

Thaivisa.com does regular parties. They are advertised on the local forum and plenty of good folks show up. Men and women. I met several great people at the one here in Pattaya.

After some research, that 4th of July party (on the 3rd) by the American's look fun! We are going to try and make it...

Based on past experience, if and when there is a TV get together in Bangkok, you will have no problem meeting new people with the demographics 10-1 males. Thithi might not like the competition.

I think I'm going to try to make it to this, as well. Look for me. I'll be wearing white pants and a black Coke shirt (in Thai.)
