BANGKOK: -- True Online has launched a super-fast broadband-Internet service for 220 upscale condominiums in Bangkok.

The Ultra-High-Speed Internet Service, with a maximum connection speed of 50 megabits per second, targets 10,000 subscribers in the initial stage, managing director Vichaow Rakphongphairoj said yesterday.

The unit of True Corp spent Bt20 million on service development, aiming to raise the bar on broadband connection speed in Thailand.

This year the company has |spent Bt2.5 billion on broadband-Internet network expansion to cover nine provinces in addition to the present 11 provinces.

It aims to grow its subscriber base to 800,000-900,000 by year-end from over 700,000 as of the first quarter.

Suphachai Chearavanont, |CEO of True Corp, said True is |driving the broadband market |by focusing on service innova-|tion to enhance high-speed Inter-|net access to suit today's life-|styles and worldwide trends.

The Ultra-High-Speed Internet Service is expected to appeal to |new generation consumers who demand premium-quality high-speed Internet access for downloading large files as well as for high definition entertainment.

The target customers are locals and expatriates in high-end urban condominiums.

The Ultra-High-Speed Internet Service is available in two packages - 50Mbps or 30Mbps connec-|tion speed. It uses the latest technology - Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line 2 |- to enhance digital informa-|tion transfer through copper |wire.

True Online also plans to launch the fibre-to-the-x (FTTx) broadband-Internet service under the Ultra-High-Speed Internet Service brand.

FTTx - in which "x" represents a home, building or any other premises - involves connecting a customer with a direct fibre optic link via a service provider to receive voice and data services.

TOT and CAT Telecom have already piloted the FTTx service in some provinces.

And yet, we still see no improvement in the international bandwidth available, so your (not so) blistering 50Mbps will drop to a trickle :(

Don't have any problem with international bandwidth i get 15-15.7mb 24/7 to usa on True 16mb premium product.

And yet, people will be complaining about international bandwidth till kingdom come.

:P

My 3BB connection is 10Mbit 24/7 as well. Even outside the country. It's still Thailand, so it will sometimes slow down or disconnect. Nothing to do with international bandwidth though.

I recommend all the Thailand ISPs upgrade their "current 2Mb to XXMb plans" to really provide the "high speed" part of their advertisements, especially for international speed.

An ISP adding a new super high speed plan/service for 220 condo's in Bangkok is all great and good, but recommend they concentrate more on providing real and reliable high speed service to the millions and millions of other homes/shacks/rooms throughout Thailand vs just to select areas in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and a few other high population/got money locations. I know, I know, the ISPs are businesses going after the most bang for their investment buck.

Its worth noting that True only guarantee half the advertised mps.

Can True spend some money fixing the problems for existing customer first. Very unreliable and it drops off often d speed is not consistent too

Hey, for a Thai ISP that's a pretty good guarantee! ;)

Yeah if they really do that, it's pretty good. I don't think any of the other ISP's give any guarantees at all. TOT don't even seem to guarantee a connection.

I am pretty much assured to get 5 - 5.5 on my 6mb True account, but sometimes even over 6. Dips down to 4 during peak hours, but I just do my heavy downloading at other times....

At a reported 5,600 baht per month price tag believe I can survive without it.

The 30 Mbps service is only 3600 baht...

Wow, I pay half that amount for 30mps in the USA. I hope it comes down by the time I move to Thailand permanently in another nine or ten years. It's been a little over a year since my most recent trip to Thailand and we only had 1mps internet service then. We'll be there in another nine months for four weeks, I'm anxious to experience the increased speeds as well as finally having a tiny bit of HDTV programming available.

No condo's have it in sukhumvit 24 after a further call. Which is crazy as the soi hosts some of the most expensive condos in Bangkok. The distance to the DSLAM for soi 24 is perfect also for VDSL. Strange rollout plan by True.

TOT does guarantee a connection; they guarantee that they "physically" hooked the line to your residence...and they will point to where they twisted the wires together to prove it to you. Now, I won't go into whether they guarantee the connection "electrically" works.

the problem is most of those are owned by farangs, much lower down the food chain apparently.

Another stupid reply. Most people think that English teachers like you are the bottom of the food chain. Bloody wannabe!

Ouch mate, go easy, I can handle it earlier in the day but wow at the end of the day it's below the belt.

Do I wannabe a English Teacher is that what you are asking? If you have noticed, True has cut back the monthly tv guide  - before it had English in it, then came the whole world cup language fiasco, then was old FA cup thing from a couple year's back.

Suk 24 would be perfect for this roll-out, new condos and serviced apartments and a wealthy clientelle, but apparently not.

Well you can get 10Mbps for about 1500.

Also "in 9 or 10 years" - are you serious? By that time the cheapest True package will be 100Mbps for a few hundred baht.

To be fair, U.S. providers have it easy - they don't need to provide a lot of bandwidth out of the country, by and large, 'cause the vast majority of servers people are going to use is in the USA anyway. There's just no big demand for accessing outside servers. YouTube servers sit in the USA, that alone probably accounts for half of all traffic.

In addition, when I was in the USA, the speed advertised was usually very different from the speed delivered. At one of my friend's houses, they said it's a 10Mbit line. Well I never got over 200KB download, e.g. 2Mbit. Only sometimes for some downloads would it go higher, and then it was 5Mbit. At another friend's house I got 10Mbit, but he had a "30 Mbit" line... I guess in the US people don't care so much because it's really fast, particularly websites are fast because of the very small lag ~ 60ms vs ~250ms or more in Thailand.

You are pretty much right on target. When web links just pop on your screen and you are able to download files fast, a person "don't" start doing all the Speedtest.net or Speakeasy.net type internet speed tests to figure how slow or fast their download/upload speed is. Heck, when I lived in the States I never did a speedtest; but after moving to Thailand I frequently visit both sites to see how my internet speed is fairing. I expect Expats in Thailand are one of the biggest users of Speedtest and Speakeasy in trying to figure what their internet speed is, so they can then complain (including me) on ThaiVisa.com about the slow international speed.

since I have a problem with True, I was looking if other True user with negative experiences,

my story:

I had for 5 years a 2.5 mbpst package (1150 Baht) with True, without complain, saw 2 months ago that they offered 8 mbps for 1199 Baht, I was thinking that is a good deal, not so, my surf speed was down most of the day, sometime I got a message that I am not connected, I am minimum 10 hours a day on the internet, all with Europe and America,

ebay, website, banking,

I contacted true, I got from one service rep. from True that I should use the True proxy, that worked better,

now comes the fun part: speed test, I use several different

http://speedtest.thaivisa.com/

http://www.speed.io/index_en.html

http://www.speedtest.net/

and I also used that one recommended on this side

http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/Run.php?QuickStart=SelectDefaults

I found out that all tests in asia gave me 8 mbps

tests to Europe or the US I got between 2.3 and 3.3 mbps speed, also with the True proxy,

I complained and the True guy said that there are to many people on the line and recommended that I take the 4 mbps package that will be better,

nothing changed, Asia I got 4 mbps, US 1.3 mbps, Europe 1 to 2 mbps,

the sad thing is that I wanted my old 2.5 mbps back, they don't sell that package anymore,

now I plan to change the provider,

has anybody an idea who sell reliable internet?

1.72Mb/s Downloads from iTunes store on 16mb True Premium.

1.5Mb/s from giganews usenet server.

1.0-1.6Mb/s Torrents.

Single threaded downloads are usually always slow. Use a download manager or torrents/usenet to get the high speeds.

We only get 16mbs here in our part of town, when we asked about the fiber service we were told we can not get it, only the 20mbs adsl2+ service in a few weeks time.

Actually i can replicate slow speeds, bad streaming, terrible international bandwidth by changing the wires used in the condo from the condo PABX to my room.

Those having a problem should ask their condo office if they could try a different pair of wires from the PABX to your room if they have it - most rooms have 2-3 wire pairs to try.

The old wire pair i was on gave me 8-10mb connections on true 16mb premium. Got them to change it over to the other pair of wires and syncs at 18.2mb.

It's not always Trues fault. A lot of the complaints can be put down to condo wiriing which True are not allowed to manipulate or alter.
