Police fear serial killer has murdered four sex workers

The Crime Suppression Division Police have cast a dragnet for a suspected serial killer wanted

in connection with the murder of four sex workers in Mukdahan, Lampang, Udon Thani and Buri Ram. Officials fear that unless caught, he will strike again.

After the naked body of strangled sex worker Sompong Pimpornpirom, 36, was found in a Buri Ram hotel room on June 21, local investigators were contacted by police in Lampang, Mukdahan and Udon Thani with information that certain patterns indicated a serial killer was on the loose.

Police identified Somkid Phumpuang, 41, as a prime suspect. “We are dealing with a serial killer, which is a rarity in Thailand,” said CSD commander Major General Winai Thongsong. “We will hunt him down to prevent him from killing again.”

Winai said Somkid came into the cross hairs of investigators after January 30, when police in Mukdahan found cabaret singer Warunee Pimpabutr, 25, drowned in a hotel room bathtub. According to the check-in register, Somkid had earlier rented the room and witnesses positively identified him from a police photograph.

Investigators already had Somkid on their files. He had received a sentence of six months imprisonment in June 2001 after confessing that he had been hired for Bt10,000 by friends of Major Chalermchai Majchaklam to give false testimony to police during the investigation into the murder of Yasothon governor Preena Leepattanapan.

The police report on the case noted that Somkid appeared mentally disturbed with a rampant libido.

Winai said while Somkid was being interrogated in the murder case, he kept begging officers to take him to a brothel.

On June 4 in circumstances eerily similar to the murder of Warunee, Pongpan Sabchai, a 34-year-old masseuse, was found strangled to death in a hotel room in Lampang.

Two weeks later, on June 19, another masseuse Porntawan Pangkabutr, 37, was found drowned in a bathtub in a hotel room in Udon Thani. By analysing footage from the hotel’s security video system, police named Somkid as the prime suspect, which eyewitnesses also confirmed.
