Are children required to be present at immigration office? I need to get a 30 day tourist extension for my toddler son, but don't really want to take him as it may be tough to manage. Can I just bring his passport and my passport with the required paperwork, photos, etc?

How old is your child? A child under a certain age, cannot be charged overstay, so in reality you do not need to get them a visa extension.

It is on the main page of TV somewhere about the age restrictions

My son is 3 years old. So, if I don't extend his visa and then get out of the country and return, will there still be a problem in the future, to enter and get another visa, etc? Is there any way to see where it officially says that children under 14 are not charged overstay? Anyone have experience?

There is no fine for children under 14 but it is officially overstay and will likely be so marked in passport when leaving. It is often marked on signs at entry/exit points/airports. So not a problem and will not effect future visa issue under current policy.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

So conceivably, he can stay here until 14? Wow, that's amazing. Anyway, I'm looking to get a 1 year non-immigrant B visa from USA, does my child also have to get one or could he enter on just 30 days without visa and overstay?

Without onward flight within 30 days airline may not allow boarding. And if here on a foreign passport (not proof of being Thai) there may be an issue for school enrollment without a valid stay. If the child has a Thai mother that should be proven and a Thai passport obtained so his entry can be made on that at some point.
