I find this subject at least mildly amusing. I recall a somewhat tongue-in-cheek article in one of the English language newspapers back in 1970 or 71 making the case that short skirts were becoming one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in Bangkok. There is about a five year memory retention period for government officials, oftentimes even less. They tackle the same subjects with regularity seeing to have no memory of the past endeavors, or possibly believing that there is something special about their effort.

On the other hand it should be observed that many Thai women have managed to bend and even squat without exposing a millimetre of additional flesh to the passing crowd. (more's the pity)

Actually, compared to Western standards, Thai women dress very modestly outside the entertainment venues.

The skirts in this picture don't seem to be very short to me. All the others seem to be sitting in such a way to block the view. What is with the number pinned to their blouses?

The second and third photos don't seem particularly revealing either.

These photos should not be allowed in TV.

Why not just pass a law and ban all skirt.

All people will then have to wear trousers or nothing at all.

Mindless journalism and a lot to do about nothing - next we will have Burka's and black skirts to the ground - get a life! angry.gif The world has moved on even if Opec is still in the dark ages.

Does anyone actually give any credibility to these Opec people?

I still don't see the problem here.

neither do I and I believe the vast majority of the forum as well... Probably issued by the Ministry of crackdowns.

What kind of skirt did (or do) you wear to university, Rucharee? I'd love to see a photo. Judging by your profile picture, I think you'd look amazing in a university uniform with short skirt.

I'm assuming that you did (or still do) go to university... but I'm not 100% sure from the content of your posts and general level of Thai education.

<BR><BR><BR>With all the corruption in Thailand it seems that the Powers that be want to tackle insignificant probems to show their control such as wearing helmets while riding a motorcycle or young women wearing short skirts. I have lived in Thailand for 11 1/2 months and though my wife is Thai and has told me all about the corruption that has always been Thailand, still I am dumbfounded, simply amazed by the corruption in every single segment of government, private business and amongst individuals. Every person you meet will try to rob you blind or at least steal something from you. It makes no difference if they are rich or poor. It would take hours for me to write about all the corruption  we have witnessed (much of it personal). And, I am sure if any farang has every run a bar or any kind of business here, they could do the same. "short skirts?!" is that all these dirty old men who live for power and wealth can think of to do?! I mean, get a life!  There are no traffic cops stopping people from speeding and unbelievable reckless driving here in Phuket  but they can sure stand on the side of the road and pull somebody over b/c he/she doesn't have a helmet on! BS! Ridiculous. Since when has ANY government agency in Thailand or any other country ever given a dam_n about the common people? Is it their business how one chooses to die?! Put another dirty photo on cigarette packages?! Come on, is that all they can do?!

For once "Thank god we have moderators". Any inappropriate, but provoked reply by K. Rucharee would be removed immediately :-)

<P>Government should have done this long time ago.</P>

Aren't most of these girls parents paying for their college/university? What is it of the government?! All governments want to control everything and everyone. Yes. If the old men who run this country don't want to look at the girls legs or let the young men look at their legs, why don't they (the government, since people think they know everything) make them dress like Muslims in all black and maybe also wear gloves like I saw one Muslim one in the grocery store in Phuket. Corruption? NO, can't check into that. Let's keep everybody in Thailand from buying beer between 2 & 5 p.m., put photos of rotten mouthes on cigarette packages, are chase down motorcylists without helmets. It is true that very few men take a second look at a Mulim woman in full black robes.

There are no truer words than "A skirt cannot be too short."

I think they should all have to wear Burkas. I think they are coming into fashion all over the world. They certainly cover everything and no man will take a second look at a woman wearing one of these black ones down past the ankles. Then no teacher/professor, administrator, men/boys would spend any time looking at the girls/women. I mean even if you could see their eyes you wouldn't be positive if the person was male or female. Problem solved. It would show that the Government (old men) care about the people of Thailand.

The imbeciles in charge of education obviously have strong connections with the old farts who run the ministry of culture (lower case intended).

This is what they want:

All of the posters who said that short skirts do not cause crime or decay 'morals' (I loathe this word) are correct.

Doesn't anybody in this country realise that they are part of 'the world', which is continually changing? If the old farts of Thailand think that they can somehow 'freeze time' in Thailand, the result will be a major backlash by the masses...as seen historically many times in other countries.

I'm hoping, no, praying you speak in jest only. Hide the women so no men is tempted? What century were you born? Because men can't control themselves women need to dress in burka's? Maybe men should be forced to take certain medicines to control their urges, or turn them into eunuchs. The last probably not a good idea, most in history fumbled around in politics.

"Quote" "Students who overly expose their flesh could become the victims of crime, he said, and urged parents to watch what their children were wearing."<BR>Is this charnwit's words or  a bit of Thai journalism. Seems someone is trying to encourage people to commit crimes.  The girls skirts in the picture are a lot longer than what is seen on television and the newspapers everyday including Bangkok streets. Funny enough in the north they are a lot longer than in Bangkok, usually below the knees.

Oh my god! Fascism reigns supreme in this country, first we have the army assassinating innocent protesters now schools are to be closed because of short skirts!

Cambodia here I come!

Go on then, jog on.

Have a nice life in the land of the free.

At least you never used the 'another nail in the coffin' line. Well done, good bye, good luck.

Let's just put the standard arguments to rest here. Group A says that an educational institute is a place for learning. Sexual suggestive clothing is a distraction that must be eliminated. Group B says that sexual distractions are a normal part of everyday life, and that school is more than just about academic education, but about social education as well, so all is good.

Overlying that is the irrelevant discussion regarding uniforms. Uniforms make no difference except to parents who feel they don't have to try and keep up with the latest fashion trends, and the uniform companies who make money selling them.

Everyone misses the point.

The simple fact is, women dress sexy because they realize early on that it gets them attention, and they like the attention. It isn't because they like sex or intend to be promiscuous, but that of course could be an end result of the desire for more and more attention by those who are psychologically inclined to go there.

This is simply biology. Try and fix this one problem and it will pop up again somewhere else. You can't eliminate sex from an adolescent, nor would it be healthy to do it if you could. Girls will always find ways to appear sexy to the boys and the boys will respond, just how nature intended it.

Even if you demand all girls wear burkhas, the boys will go to great lengths watching the sway of those burkhas trying to figure out who is the sexiest underneath, and the girls will try to amplify their walk to encourage this. Then we'll have to listen to some stupid government minister try and regulate the amount of hip sway allowed. I'd rather listen to stupid arguments about the length of the skirt.

In the end, no matter what she wears, an attractive girl will attract the attention of the boys, and she will like it and enforce the behaviour. Other girls who are less attractive will be jealous of the attention, and attempt to compete by accentuating their sex appeal, thus raising the stakes. This is called normal human development, and has been going on for millions of years, even in the animal kingdom.

Trying to control this natural behaviour in a group of university students is simply stupid on a scale I can't even comprehend. Let the poor girls waste away dieting, and let the poor boys go broke and do stupid stunts trying to win their favours. Nothing anyone does will ever change that. In the end, everyone has to learn this lesson for themselves.

And the government should just leave well enough alone.

Are these dress rules written by fat, unattractive women who want equal opportunities?

Thailand needs an "Education Revolution" today! The Thai Government should place emphasis on education in Thailand and make it it's top priority. I see today in the Singapore Straits Times that China is making English a must to learn in there education system.

Thailand must do the same going forward.

Yes, your post is Awesome. Thailand needs to be able to complete and she needs to train her people for higher Education....not wearing short skirts to schools. Are Thai women in general still wearing long skirts and behave well in public like the old day ? I have been told from the recruiters that College students can not fully function in the world market.. from my own experience Thai students are very bright and can do...they just need extra training then they will do well..my take and opinion.

P.S. the Dress Rule must belong to unattractive women who are smart and they can earn their honest living without wearing short skirts..I am standing tall. Opp forget to tell you that I am a good looking woman and never wear any short skirt in public. I have almost everything. I am trying to keep them all. Knock, knock my wood....

Love your Awesome Post and it did trickle my memory when I was in Thailand in 1970.History always repeats ifself again.

In California I see college students wearing short skirt but adding thick stockings to cover their flesh even summer...you can check them out on Berkeley campus...or Art colleges in San Francisco...

My take.

as we know from european morals is let em have it

Well, I wouldn't wear short skirt or short shorts at school... its cheesy and yea, cheesy!

Those who wear them at school wanna be cool...

What has the world come to? Are school uniform skirt lengths really so important? Teenage girls are not nuns and it doesnt affect what they think about world hunger when they wear a short skirt. Its not as if what people wear is connected to their brains.

I dont think adults give young people enough credit these days. Children are maturing much faster, but were not all sex-crazed maniacs. I dont think teachers are used to seeing girls as young as twelve wear make-up and have a boyfriend. Maybe they dont have much confidence in girls who wear short skirts. Maybe they think theyre going to jump into bed with someone.

Of course any adult who has regular contact with children has a moral duty to look out for their well-being, but not to the point where they dictate what they wear. My mother stopped dressing me when I was six. It wasnt as though I started wearing lipstick and heels the second she took her eyes of me.

If pupils want to follow the rules, fine no doubt theyll be forever law-abiding citizens. But I think anyone who really takes responsibility for themselves works out what they think about every issue. Im not promoting anarchy, but I think that anyone with a mind of their own looks at rules and decides which they think are right and which they believe to be a waste of time. At the end of the day, you can have 10 GCSEs, all grade A to C, and have a skirt half way up your thighs. It just proves some rules are silly and pedantic and it doesnt matter if you abide by them or not.

I have no idea why headteachers get so bothered about uniform. Schools arent perfect and headteachers cant be responsible for it all. Anyway, I dont see every female teacher with a skirt down to her knees.

Those who judge only by appearance are too shallow to be bothered to get close enough to someone to find out what theyre like. Headteachers are there to do whats best for the children in the school not whats best for its image. Theyre not always the same thing. Teenagers are worrying about what options they can take and what they need to do in their exams, but headteachers can seem more wrapped up in whether theyre wearing a tie or not.

Its important to manage the standards of a school but they should be based on its academic achievement. Education isnt just about passing exams, but it shouldnt be about pupils appearance either. Sadly, thats the way it seems to be heading.

I know there are some dangerous people out there but I dont think the way to protect us is to lower our skirt lengths. When we leave school, we can do what we like thats when the danger begins. Young people need educational lessons on personal safety something that will stay in our minds forever, not just until were out of uniform.

Camille Noriega, 14

I think standards are important. Some girls take this skirt business too far they roll them up to their elbows and basically they just look like sluts. A good school wants to create a generation of pupils who can find jobs and make a mark in the world, so its good that a headteacher enforces the rules about school uniform. You could argue that theyre just being old-fashioned but, on the other hand, they might think things are better the way they were before. Of course society is moving on, but if pupils are doing things that affect their education and the reputation of the school just because theyre trendy then the headteacher has a right to put his foot down.

If I was a mother and saw a group of scruffy pupils, I would probably think they were unruly and that their teachers couldnt control them. Id also think that their school didnt have very high standards. The school image rests on its doing well in the league tables and being strong in different subjects, but I wouldnt want my daughter to go to a school where pupils dressed like this.

If youre part of a school community, you should listen to the guidelines and follow the rules. Girls in ridiculously short skirts bring down the reputation of the school for the others. Even if its just a few doing it, teachers are going to be harder on everyone else. Weve just got a new uniform at my school. The teachers asked the whole school what they wanted and the whole school was happy with it. Its OK for adults to overrule young people, but when they ask us for ideas they are able to come up with a solution that works for everyone.

Parents who would rather their daughters sit around at home than alter their uniforms might respect teenagers opinions but theyre failing to draw the line. Theres a lack of morals here and I would say theyre going about parenthood the wrong way. Parents have to show you cant get away with it.

I think there is a need to have a review of uniforms in many schools. Teachers should find out what girls have to say about them rather than knowing nothing about how they are going to feel or why short skirts are popular in the first place.

But if you really want to go somewhere in life, you know its whats inside that counts. I know that its working hard thats going to give me independence and the ignorant girls who might tease people like me put appearance before common sense. If they want to waste their time and have a nowhere life, theyre going the right way about it.

Theyll end up having to rely on the dole.

yes i know ut here it is.

Well, it does really beg the question how smart the students are.  Stop breaking the bloody rules about uniforms and then no issue.

The handbook for my kids school is full of the basics for uniforms and the elder high school kids dress like complete slobs.  The sad thing is that they only started to do something about it when a kid who was wearing a school tie knotted somewhere around his navel and it got caught (inside the knotted length) when he was running around like a bloody idiot and nearly broke his neck  So now they have to do the knots up as they always should have done.

The debate is not about whether uniforms should be in schools and uni's or not, it is about whether kids should obey rules.  For me schools should have uniforms, universities you should be able to wear what you like, within reason.

As for the other issues of corruption, all very valid and very sad.

Wow, you choose a very apt screen name. Instead of focusing on the valid points from the post that you quoted (plagiarism and cheating) which really should be against the rules. You choose to focus on the dangers of not wearing your uniform properly. Yes the danger to the boy came from not wearing his uniform properly and not from running around like an idiot. For me they should be teaching kids not to run around like idiots, and to especially not walk in front of cars and motorcycles. That would be a much better fix to the problem which you have brought up. And to extend that logic a bit further the educational system should focus on education and not on what the student body is wearing.
