Feeding Elephants Now Illegal In Bkk

Just saw some breaking news that it is now a major fine to feed any elephants in the city.

http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/world/feeding+elephants+crime+in+bangkok/3708737 - lots of stories on the web

Now I don't want to get into another big debate about it's bad for elephants in the city etc - we know it is but yet again the authorities are attempting the band-aid solution. Perhaps if they cant get rid of the elephants in the city they should make them wear a sign now that says "Feeding Me Will Cost You 10,000 Baht".

So be warned if you see a Chang and handlers strolling by you in a tourist area. I suspect the BIG (boys in Green) will be not far behind. Double warning goes out to smokers and those who feed elephants.

Coincidentally, I was at the Dusit Zoo last weekend with my family and my son fed the elephants some bread that they were selling. Will this too be banned?

I always like to give them the benefit of any doubt, but the ridiculous way that anti-elephant statute is written seems as if someone went out of their way to create a new scam for the police. There is absolutely no legitimate reason to include those who unknowingly feed an elephant in this law, and doing so only assures the police will not drive the elephants out of the City, but follow them around looking for a tourist to pounce on. To rid the City of elephants, they should concentrate their efforts on those who bring elephants into the City, and this is so obvious, they must know it.

Arrogance is the usual downfall of those who are corrupt, and it seems they have reached the point of arrogance that they barely bother to hide their corruption anymore.
Is there a fine for riding on an elephants back in Bangkok too? There used to be an elephant coming in our soi once per quarter or so and my daughter loved to ride on her back, after she had fed her of course :)

Coming to think of it, must be 6 months since the elephant came by
