I read in saturdays Nation excerpts of a speach by the prime minister saying that a broadband satellite will be launched this month, can anyone give me information on the price and who to contact to sign up for this service. I live in a dial up area.

The system is up and running already, the sattelite they'll launch soon will only expand capacity.

At the moment both Thaicom1 and Thaicom3 are used to provide the service.

More info at http://www.csloxinfo.com/broadband/ipstar_en.asp

Price is high if you download a lot. (the "unlimited"account costs a cool 9500 Baht/month :o )

Download speed is good and constant, however surfing seems slow due to the lag inherrent to sattelite links...

Hi Monty,

I currently pay 2000b/month to d/load 12gb + 24gb 0200 to 0900. Cable bband.

How does that compare with LoS fees?

I've had I.P.-Star for about 9months. I paid 20,000 installation because it was new and on offer. Now they've settled down they're on about 5,000 installation fee. ( remember this is Thailand, so everything is ass about apex) I pay 4,850 a month, which just about breaks even at the price I charge for usage. It's good, quite quick and not many problems. Also it doesn't tyie up phone lines, or if you have no phone line it is very good for remote places. Only drawback is, if it rains in the hub region you can lose signal for a short while.

Hi,

I plan on using the IPStar service in Laos, but I'm not sure if Thai companies would be willing to travel there to do the installation. Is it possible to perform the installation oneself? or does anyone know of Thai companies that are willing to travel to Laos to perform the installation?

cheers,

Stephen

You don't really need to get the service from IPstar, there are other broadband satellites servicing the SEA area. It's just that the local law may or may not allow you to use overseas services (Thailand doesn't allow it).
