A destructive tropical storm has hit parts of Northern Thailand over the last 24 hours; the storm is a downgraded version of Typhoon Conson, which struck the Philippines late last week. At present, the most affected region has been the Northern Thai province of Nan, where severe mudslides and flooding have left hundreds homeless and devastated local infrastructure.

Nan, the 20th of July 2010: Tropical Storm Conson, as it is being heralded by local media, was downgraded to a depression by meteorological advisors as it passed over parts of China, Vietnam and Laos on the weekend. Despite the weakening of the force, that completely devastated parts of the Philippines last week, similar destructive properties have been witnessed as the storm has passed over parts of rural Thailand.

Local communities in two districts of Nan province have been severely affected by torrential rains, mudslides and severe flooding brought by the remanets of Typhoon Conson. Residents in the district of Pua have been evacuated after attempts to build a series of levees to direct the flooding failed. Housing, infrastructure and a large portion of the regions farmlands have been damaged in the storm with hundreds now homeless.
