You may or not be aware of the original beginnings of the humble Karaoke machine actually first appeared here in Kan.

Living in Kanchanaburi we are privy to this sort of sensitive information and I feel honour bound to pass this on, so that you will be aware of the great evil surrounding this seemingly fun activity.

It all started during the 2nd world war, whilst the Japs were occupying Thailand. In an effort to hide there treasures and religious icons from the greedy Japs, many Thais stashed their gold and Buddha’s into caves, keeping them safely away from the gold hungry Japs. The death railway was at this time just getting underway, and was progressing at a good rate. As time went by and the torture and underfeeding of the POW's started to take its toll, the Japanese were forced into finding new ways to punish the poor underfed, over worked POW's. The water torture was fairly effective, as was the tin shack in the midday sun. Standing out in the sun with a heavy stone at arms length also proved to both despicable and effective, but all of these methods left the prisoner to weak to actually be of any use. It was a lowly corporal who came up with the idea of tying the prisoner up, leading them into one of the local caves used for stashing the locals goods in and there forcing them to undergo the horrific punishment of listening to the Japanese soldiers sing there favourite songs. Hence the worlds first Karaoke was developed. Karaoke from the Japanese word to rip out a mans genitals through his ears. Karaoke is the legacy of Japanese occupation here in Thailand during the 2nd world war!

From: Karaoki History

"BORN IN KOBE :

Karaoke is a Japanese abbreviated compound word: "kara" comes from "karappo" meaning empty, and "oke" is the abbreviation of "okesutura," or orchestra.

Usually, a recorded popular song consists of vocals and accompaniment. Music tapes in which only the accompaniment is recorded were named "karaoke."

It is now widely recognized that the use of karaoke started at a snack bar in Kobe City. It is said that when a strolling guitarist could not come to perform at the bar due to illness or other reasons, the owner of the bar prepared tapes of accompaniment recordings, and vocalists enjoyed singing to the tapes. Even though it is only legend, this might have been the beginning of karaoke, and since then, karaoke has been commercialized and has become popular all over Japan."

But actually I like Boatabike's explanation and find that information to be more believeable. :o
