Looking For A Commuter Bicycle Shop

I'm looking for a bicycle shop in Chiang Mai catering to commuter cyclist's needs.

Recently bought a commuter bike from Chaitawat but even they don't carry appropriate fenders for it, nor do the other shops I've been to (Jacky, Arm, Velocity, Top Gear).

With a decent sized commuter cyclist population, there must be a shop carrying a product range catering to this genre of bicycling?

Not sure how good their selection of accessories is but Song Bicycles seems to make most their revenue off commuter bikes and they have a lot of them to chose from. Not sure exactly what you're classifying as a commuter bike though, I'm thinking of Thai-made Rayleighs, 3 speed Schwinns, Thai knock-off Flying Pigeons, etc.You can find their shop at N18.79507 E98.99276.

I'm in the market for a bicycle myself, haven't built up the motivation to actually go hunting yet(!) but I do have a couple of notes that may be useful to you:

- Song Bicycle Ltd., Part.

3/4-6 Sri Phum Rd.

T. Sri Phum

A. Muang

Chiang Mai 50200

Thailand

Telephone: 053-213404

Fax: 053-211515

- "Song

Follow Moon Muang Road north to the corner of the moat, swing left into Sri Phum and it's on your left. Not as well run or stocked as Chaitawat, but a good alternative if the latter hasn't got what you need. A good place to pick up a cheap new bike if you're only around for a short while and don't need anything too good. Dealer L.A. Bicycle."

from: http://www.chiangmaicycling.org/bicycleshops.html

- "There is a bike shop on Mahidol Road in Chiang Mai specialising in road bikes - Crouching Tiger Tours - run by Australian guy. They have some bike clothes and accessories as well and are very helpful - they dont have a huge amount of bike stock but will get stuff in for you - well worth a visit - " from:

A friend recently purchase a "hybrid" bike from Crouching Tiger for B15,000, he seems very happy with it.

I may, I say "may"(!), get along to Song Bicycles later today, if I do then I'll report back here.

Thanks for the tip on Song bicycle guys. Yeah, Schwinn's, Raleigh's and knock off Flying Pidgeons is exactly what I'm thinking.

I actually bought a hybrid from Crouching Tiger too. Its a Kona Dew Plus. They only stock 52 cm, otherwise I would've bought a smaller one for my girlfriend too. Its a good bike. 700c wheels, disc brakes, decent shimano components. Aftermarket fenders are a must for commuting though. Still looking for those, will check out Song later.

A few months ago I gave my neighbours son my bicyle after I purchased a new one for myself. As the De Railier gears were a little out of adjustment I thought that I would get them adjusted before giving the young lad my old bike, actually only about three years old and in perfect condition apart from needing the gears adjusting. I took it to the above mentioned shop and picked it up the next day in my pickup without actually looking at, getting it home I then tried to ride it, they had completely stuffed up the gears, I took it to another shop and they had to put a complete new De Railier gear set on it. It actually cost me 800 Baht to give the bike away.

I think that I've heard at least one horror story about servicing about just about every bike shop in Chiang Mai except Jackie and TCA, including one about a shop that immediately with try to sell you a new rear cassette (I'm guessing that's what you mean by "De Railier" gear set) when actually all was needed was for the rear derailleur to be adjusted. Nonetheless, even a shop that isn't good at servicing bikes might be perfectly capably of selling you a pair of fenders that you can put on your bike yourself.

I've had only good experiences at the little bike shop on Bumrung Buri Road (southern moat road) just past the Sam Lan Rd intersection travelling east.

Must be about the smallest bike shop in Chiang Mai, but always happy with their services & parts purchases.
