Implanon In Thailand...

Hi all,

Tonight my girlfriend went to Burmrungrad Hospital to get an Implanon implant inserted in her arm. Before starting, the doctor told her it would cost 50,000 baht! I had been telling her all along it should probably cost 1 - 2000 baht. Needless to say she left the hospital without getting it done.

Can someone please help us find a decent place to get this done? Her next try will be at Samitivej Hospital, unless someone here can give us a better alternative. Are there any clinics which specialise in this sort of stuff? Is it available at any general clinic?

My grilfriend thinks the doctor was looking down on her, insinuating she's poor and couldn't afford it, so whether this was doctor's attitude or not I'll never know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I had a bad experience at Burmrungrad too, and have found them far more expensive than the others, so I wouldn't worry about it, I think she did the right thing to walk away.

I can definitely recomend Samitivej Womens Clinic, and have used BNH in the past too with no complaints at all. I think BNH might be a bit cheaper than Samitivej. Both treated me wonderfully.

I don't know how much Implanon costs in Thailand though, I know when I had it in Australia a few years back it was $150 or so.

I found implanon great until there was a death close to me and implanon+grief sent my progesterone wacky, so had it taken out as everything was making me cry for no reason. Before that no problems at all.

Good luck finding a good doctor.

Thanks girls. We'll give the Samitvej Women's Clinic a go next. We had been to Burmrungrad before for a simple operation and I thought the price was very reasonable! It was about the cost of a visit to a GP in Australia and we came out very pleased.

I don't know what went on for this Implanon visit. Maybe the doctor thought she wanted 'implants'??

So we've made a booking at Samitivej, they say it will be about 10,000 baht all up. I think 8,000 baht for the Implanon and then some extra for consultation I suppose.

This still seems quite expensive to me. Way over double for what it would cost to have done in Australia.

I'll try and find out the price at BNH.

I'm not sure, I guess that could be it... Australian websites state 'Implanon® costs $5 - $25 every three years plus the cost of insertion by your doctor.' No indication of whether it's subsidised or not.

Email back from BNH states that it will be 12,500 baht + 200 hospital service fee. Do you think a government run hospital would be significantly cheaper?

I don't know. It could very well be imported and therefor, no, not cheaper.

But I have to ask, is your gf on hormonal based bc right now? Has she had trouble free hormonally based bc? Some women do not do well on this kind of bc so be aware that if she exhibits side effects it will have to come out.

So how did she go?

I thought about it and 10,000 would be comparable to a consult by a gynie and the cost of the implanon, drugs, insertion, nurse etc in Australia. And that would be at a small gynie office, whereas Samitivej is one of the top places around for womens health here. They will probably give her some kind of checkup too.

The hospital near Lumphini where the red cross is (starts with Ch..) might be another option if you are still shopping around.

Hope she is well.

She can get it done for much less at a government hospital.

An intermediate option would be one of the less pricey private hospitals, e.g. Chao Phya (Pink Lao area), Phyathai (several locations), Bangkok Christian (Silom), Sikarn (Bang na) etc

I'd suggest Bangkok Christian as a good choice. they are not a Catholic hospital and do provide family planning services.

Just want to give some update (2019) on this topic. I just visited Samitivej Sukhumvit hospital and was quoted around THB15,000 for contraceptive implant in the arm (implanon) pretty much all inclusive. IUD will be THB12,000 or 15,000 depending on which type you choose (the more expensive one has some hormone that will regulate and make your period lighter and less painful over time).

My girlfriend got the implant for 4600 at bangpakok hospital. Her periods did get different for a while (first one lasted very long) but it stabilized within 2 months.

Can you please tell me which bangpakok hospital specifically because bangpakok have multiple branches and because we called and were quoted around 10000 bhat at bangpakok 1 and also bangpakok 9 international hospital.

Hi! I'm visiting Thailand as a tourist in February 2020. I'm singaporean, but i'm working as an expat in a country that doesn't offer nexplanon at all. Thinking to get my current 3.5-year-old nexplanon replaced during my thailand trip. If anyone can vouch for a recent hospital they visited, what prices, how long did the entire procedure take etc. TIA

I'll need to get my Nexplanon replaced soon, and I wondered if anyone had any new info to add about the best place to go? Some of these prices are eye-watering!

Just go to your local government hospital, costs about 2500THB.

Thanks, how realistic is it that I will be able to navigate the process at a gov hospital if I don't speak any Thai?

Should be possible, usually somebody can at least understand some English. The government hospital here in Chiang Mai even has a designated information desk for foreigners.

It's also nothing complicated that you want, just show them a picture of it and it should work.

The process in government hospitals is usually like this:

You register with them and inform then what you want, they tell you to which department to go.

You go to the department and talk with a doctor there.

Then you get a paper from him which you take to the cashier, and pay whatever the procedure costs.

Then you take the receipt to the pharmacy, they give you the implant. Then you take this back to the doctor and he will implant it.

Usually some waiting time and a queue number involved between all those steps, bring some time, it's not as quick as a private hospital, but considerably cheaper.
