sabaijai
The post offices understand both but which is more correct from a Thai point of view? From the Thai point of view it's เชียงราย According to the Royal Thai Institute, the official Roman transcription is Chiang Rai. Limbo
The official invitation for the opening ceremony of the Hall of Opium, presided over by His Royal Higness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, having been graciously designated to do this by His Majesty the King, mentions Chiang Rai. Mr. Sabaijai wrote: According to the Royal Thai Institute, the official Roman transcription is Chiang Rai. The management of Thaivisa.com chose Chiang Rai in the name of this forum. I looked through my business-cards book of the local higher echelon and a little bit more than halve of its holders chose for Chiang Rai. If you type in Chiangrai on Google you get 107,000 hits. If you type in Chiang Rai on Google you get 723,000 hits. I have always used Chiangrai, also to accentuate the difference with Chiang Mai. Mr. Thetyim and I are probably not the only ones who have to start using Chiang Rai. I really will try to do it from now on. Thanks for this clarifying tread Mr. Chownah!
