PM: Decree to be lifted in more areas of Northeast, last in BKK

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has declared that the Government is planning to lift the Emergency Decree in more northeastern provinces; however, Bangkok will be the last to be considered.

Prime Minister Abhisit revealed that the authorities would soon determine whether to revoke the Emergency Decree in additional provinces in the northeast

after normalcy had been guaranteed in those areas. On the other hand, he insisted that Bangkok would be the last province freed from the decree due to security concerns following a bomb blast in front of King Power Complex on Rangnam Road on 26 August, which critically wounded one security guard.

The special law is currently enforced in 7 provinces, comprising Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Samut Prakan.

Relatives of 3 Thai detainees in Cambodia returned from a prison visit

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Relatives of the three Thai nationals arrested by Cambodian authorities and detained in Cambodia's Siem Reap province have all returned from a prison visit on Friday morning.

The three detainees were reported worry-free and in good health. They also confirmed good prison treatments and that meals had been provided two times a day.

Detainee Sanong Wongcharoen’s brother in law, Thongdee Thongkam, thanked relevant agencies for organizing the visit and providing assistance throughout the trip. Meanwhile, Siam Reap provincial Governor has ensured his commitment to expedite the liberation of all detainees, reasoning that many have unintentionally strayed across the border. He suggested Thai and Cambodian Government to officially join hands to prevent the re-occurrence of such offenses.

The three Thai villagers were arrested by Cambodian authorities for trespassing last week as they crossed the border from the northeastern province of Surin into the neighboring Cambodia while hunting and foraging. The Cambodian authorities apprehended them for illegal entry and also suspected them of spying.

Office of Ombudsman seeks court’s injunction against Auditor-General

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Office of the Ombudsman has sought the court's injunction to suspend the role of Auditor-General Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka until the court’s verdict is issued on her legitimacy.

The petition was lodged on Friday with the Administrative Court by Mr Pramote Chotimongkol, Chief Ombudsman, calling for the suspension of Khunying Jaruvan’s status as the Auditor-General. The move stemmed from the doubt cast by the Senate over whether she should have retired when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 years.

Khunying Jaruvan, however, reaffirmed to continue her role in the job despite the Council of State's recommendation that her term of office had ended.

She cited a previous announcement of the coup makers in 2006, which authorized her to remain in the post until her replacement was appointed.

DSI pledges to report on political violence within 60 days

By The Nation

gallery_327_1086_1286.jpg

DSI director general Tharit Pengdit

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will conclude its probes into the deaths of 89 citizens and government officials who were killed during the redshirt rallies this spring within 60 days.

"We will try to beat the deadline," DSI director general Tharit Pengdit said yesterday.

He said he had just received a written order from the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES). The order gave the DSI 60 days to present evidence, including circumstantial evidence, witnesses, forensic examinations, as well as ballistic tests, and to determine who caused the deaths.

Tharit said the DSI would establish a team to prepare a report on each of the victims.

He added that the DSI would also pay special attention to the deaths of two foreign cameramen because their cases could affect Thailand's relationships with foreign countries.

On the DSI probes into 83 suspected financiers of redshirt violence, Tharit said the probes should be concluded by September 20.

"We are processing information that we've received," he said.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Region 4 revealed that it had already concluded 163 out of 190 redshirt cases in its hands.

"Of the pending 27 cases, 12 has already seen the arrests or the surrenders of the suspects, Provincial Police Region 4 deputy commissioner MajGeneral Kawee Suphanan said.

His agency's jurisdiction covers 11 provinces in the upper part of the Northeast, which is a redshirt stronghold.

"We have instructed the superintendents of all police stations under our supervision to seriously work on the pending cases. They must report the progress to us every week," Kawee said.

He said that there were in fact 206 redshirt "cases" detected in his area during the recent redshirt rallies. However, the DSI and the Central Investigation Bureau have taken over 16 of the cases.

Democrat Party spokesman Buranat Samutharak gave his assurance that the accused red shirts and their rival yellow shirts would receive the same treatment when going to the justice system.

"Neither side is above laws," he said in response to red shirts' claim that there were double standards.

Many yellowshirt core leaders turned themselves in to police on Wednesday to face charges relating to their seizure of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in 2008.

PolGeneral Prathin Santiprapop yesterday reported himself to police to face charges relating to his participation in the yellowshirt rally at the airports.

Prathin is a former national police chief, and a former senator.
