Video footage exposing a Thai teacher caning students at a Catholic boarding school in Nakhon Ratchasima has appeared on Thai television recently. The teacher, not certified by the Teacher’s Council of Thailand, has subsequently been suspended by the school.

Nakhon Ratchasima, the 31st of August 2010: The controversial footage was aired on Thai television Monday, showing art teacher, Somchai Limthanmaporn caning several students at the St. Mary’s School in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. Over 40 students have since come forward complaining of Mr. Limthanmaporn’s use of corporal punishment, forcing the school to suspend him from duty.

A school administrator, Nongkran Prathumtri, stated that the school could not condone Mr. Limthanmaporn’s actions and has subsequently released him from employment with the facility. No professional sanctions have been taken against Mr. Limthanmaporn, who is not an accredited teacher with the Teacher’s Council of Thailand. Parents of the children involved have however filed complaints with police over the beatings.

Sadistic personality disorder is:

A] A pervasive pattern of cruel, demeaning, and aggressive behavior, beginning by early adulthood, as indicated by the repeated occurrence of at least four of the following:

1. has used physical cruelty or violence for the purpose of establishing dominance in a relationship (not merely to achieve some non-interpersonal goal, such as striking someone in order to rob him/her).

2. humiliates or demeans people in the presence of others.

3. has treated or disciplined someone under his/her control unusually harshly.

4. is amused by, or takes pleasure in, the psychological or physical suffering of others (including animals).

5. has lied for the purpose of harming or inflicting pain on others (not merely to achieve some other goal).

6. gets other people to do what he/she wants by frightening them (through intimidation or even terror).

7. restricts the autonomy of people with whom he or she has a close relationship, e.g., will not let spouse leave the house unaccompanied or permit teenage daughter to attend social functions.

8. is fascinated by violence, weapons, injury, or torture.

B] The behavior in A has not been directed toward only one person (e.g., spouse, one child) and has not been solely for the purpose of sexual arousal (as in sexual sadism).

This teacher needs to be caned, publicly.

Would something like this happen to my son, I'd pay somebody to let him know what real pain is. He wouldn't be back at school. How can you call him a teacher?

Okay, let's face it. some teachers at elementary schools are using bamboo sticks to hit the little kids. But it's over at high school level.

I hope the students in this movie will find him in the middle of the night.

Good to have cell phones in the classroom.........

So what's the problem?

The problem is it's illegal ...LTGTR!!

I posted about a ladyboy teacher hitting children with a stick at a school in Pattaya including my 6 year old daughter. The teacher in question is also not qualified and still teaching at the same school. My daughter now attends a different school with more parents leaving the school in question next term. I did ask a few media outlets if they were interested in the story but i believe they were scared and we did have a police report to back up our story. Good to see something is being done!!

Except I wouldn't pay anyone, I would rather inflict the damage myself. It would be swift and severe and people in Comas always have difficulty in pressing charges. :D

Without knowing the specific situation it is not easy to understand why this teacher was caning the students.

Before comdemning it and beside comdemning it it would be interesting to know. What was his intention in doing so?

It would be possible this teacher canes the students because he cannot keep them in line in another way.

This means he has no other personal faculties to keep them in line in another way.

It is also possible he cannot keep them in line because he cannot control outside aspects , just imagine he is not supported by the staf of the school in using other, more acceptable measures, to keep his students in line.

Then I wonder what the actual problem of the situation is: is there a problem becos the teacher is caning children that are not his children, since it is a common practice in Thailand children can be physically punished by their parents, ofcourse not by everyone.

It are not only teachers having problems to keep children in line.

We could also say it is possible this teacher cannot have himself in line like this board shows there are adult contributors overhere who cannot have themself in line.

Fortunately non of them are the teachers of my children.

I wonder what the learning results were of the students this teacher teached in his way.

I taught at a gov school for a while and was told by the Asst Director and many others to hit the "naughty" students with a bamboo stick. They were high school students. I said I wouldn't do it. I sent disruptive students to the Asst. Director and he hit them with a stick. It's very common to hit the students whatever their age.The students knew I wouldn't hit them. The Thai education system is very, very broken and the hitting of students is just one small facet of the problem.

Amazing world we live in...although it worked for me when I was young, I even listened sometimes after a good spank. Never bothered me though, I knew I deserved it ....till I was strong enough to spank back.

i watched the video.

Looks like he is getting ready for a tennis serve.

I must hurt, but I am sure I heard laughter in the classroom.

Not sure what to make of it.

Nervous laughter is laughter evoked from an audience's expression of embarrassment, alarm, or confusion, rather than amusement.

Have people forgotten that until 30 odd years ago caning was common place in English schools and was completely acceptable. In my view caning , properly carried out, never did anyone any harm. I was caned myself on several occasions and believe it taught me the right lesson. The threat of the cane often acted as a deterrent without it being needed to be carried out. Since corporal punishment was banned in English schools discipline has become a major problem as teachers have few ways to punish pupils and even have to ask parents permission before giving a detention.

Some of the yobs in our societies today would have benefited from a good caning in their youth!!!

By the look of his shirt and swagger in swing, it looks like the Red Shirt drill instructor. The kids were probably holding the M79 launchers the wrong way or not pulling the sling shots hard enough. In that case, they deserved it. I heard that the Thai Catholic Schools were the breeding grounds for extremists.

Either that or the guy's testing his new cane/bullet proof pants for children in his science room? For export to Singapore?

"punishment to students who failed to clean their living quarters".

Before comdemning it and beside comdemning it it would be interesting to know. What was his intention in doing so?

presumably to ensure having more tidy rooms in the school's dormitory.

I wonder what the learning results were of the students this teacher teached in his way.

Perhaps something like, "If I fail to wipe down the window sill in my room daily, I will be brutalized."
