And frankly, most [legit] things the government deals with doesn't require a degree OR does infact require a PH.D. or more in economics if you expect the MPs to themselves formulate economical theories. But we don't, we just require them to listen and chose the most applicable one.

Perhaps that is part of the problem.

A demand of a degree is just another way to keep some 'unwanted' individuals out. Hence why it is so fun that PT want the old constitution back where even a normal MP position demanded a degree - i.e. even harder for any poor to get into any position of influence. Fighting for the poor by making it harder for them to gain influence...alrighty then...

The need for a degree is as useful as demanding an IQ or EQ test before allowing anyone to enter their elected position. Actually, even less. The latter atleast might indicate something of value.

I remember the days when all of a sudden MP's needed a degree (although a minor one would suffice). It created a new industry. It was unbelievable how quickly some of the older MP's managed to find time to write a thesis of an acceptable academical value. I can only say bravo, well done. It certainly raises the level of expectation on those MP's, need to recover investment probably.

Do you believe civil engineers should have degrees in their field?

Read The Fountainhead by Ann Rand.

Good suggestion. That has long been on my list of required reading. It has been recommended to me many times. I simply haven't made the time to read it as there are many books that fall into the same category. I shall do so soon. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

You mean Rand who studied Social Pedagogy, majoring in history and minors in philosophy at Petrogard Sate University?

How would a story 'fountainhead' about someone with an 'architect degree' who bucked conservative building concepts have anything do with Thailand or this off topic bent?

At least there is John Galt in 'Atlas Shrugged' who convinces the Elite, all University graduates, to withdraw their gifts from the ungrateful masses, a story about govts and finances, a book that lionises the captains of industry and the well educated upper crust as objective for success of Society.

Churchill or Hitler were not so great at academia, but it's a myth Einstein was a drop out. he excelled in, guess what?, math and physics.

it's hard to believe Bush could have got a degree!? though he is a friend of Thaksin's so could have 'bought' one.

A degree is no guarantee of intelligence, or even of capability. I know many with Masters and PhD's who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I also know a man who quit school at the age of 16 in order to go to work to help his family. At 18 he enlisted in the Army, went to Korea and was decorated more than once for bravery. He was also an undefeated light heavyweight during his time in service. After the Army he worked two full time jobs, while also getting married and adopting the woman's then 6 yr old son and loved him as if he were his own, never making a distinction between that child and the 3 sons that later followed. By the age of 30 he was working just one full time job, having been promoted several times for his work ethics, his moral ethics, and his knowledge of the company as a whole. He wisely invested in some "farm land" that he picked up "dirt cheap". By the age of 40 he had made his first million from his investments, which ranged from real estate to starting a small home delivery company for heating oil, which he later sold at a very nice profit to a larger company.

Today he owns a modest, unassuming home in southern Indiana that gives no clue to his wealth. He spends his summers there, and winters in Treasure Island, Florida. Along with being one of the smartest men I have ever known, he's also the most honest and straightforward one as well. I have more respect for him than anyone.

By the way, I was the 6 yr old he adopted.

I'm currently organising a conference for 600 scientists and I assure you that they are just as bloody stupid and dishonest as everyone else.

I know they choose the job but its very scary.

Why do politians have to hold a degree? anyone know the answer to this?

Yes. They don't. Under the present constitution there is no requirement of a university degree for an a person to be an MP.

There is a requirement of a degree for a cabinet member (minster) or the PM.

Oh, so that's ok then  .

Absolutely. A minister controls important aspects of the government and the country as a whole. Without an appropriate education he cannot hope to have the knowledge to govern properly. Degrees in economics, political science, finance, history, or other similar fields are reasonable expectations to have of a person controlling the government purse strings and forming national policy.

An MP is responsible to his constituency and is a legislator. An MP is the voice of the people in his constituency, and therefore a formal degree is not necessary. This is a very different role compared with that of a minister in my opinion.

A college degree is just a form of equipment. It will always be the case that a few will learn to use this equipment well but most won't: Most will use it as a weapon rather than a tool. Of course, there are many different ways that people equip themselves with education and (more importantly) wisdom than just being privileged to attend higher education. Thai politics and professional life are full of formally educated idiots. Many bright people are lost from the country's advancement because of this absurd semi-feudal control system.

Whenever fake degrees come up, a prime example is from Samak's Cabinet in the form of Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Sutha Chansaeng.

His bogus degree, as well as hiding a ton of assets in the name of his illegitimate son, led him to be the first, of many, to resign from Samak's Cabinet in disgrace.

His alleged bachelor degree came from the degree mill, Republican College in the Philippines

and his claims left a paper trail of BS a mile wide, such as his obtaining a passport for the first time 10 years after he supposedly graduated from the prestigious university.

Newin is not alone :

Suthep: Assassination attempt still a rumor

BANGKOK, 6 September 2010 (NNT) – An assassination rumor plotted against key figures of the Government and national security units is not yet confirmed, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Thaugsuban.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that he had ordered intelligence units to seek more information and map out preventive measures to deal with the situation. He said he still could not say anything about the assassination plot.

Mr Suthep speculated that the plot might be real but was leaked, or might be just a rumor; however, he confirmed that the Government would stay alert to this issue. He said so far there had been no reports to verify the matter.

The rumor is spreading that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Mr Suthep himself, as well as Bhum Jai Thai de facto leader Newin Chidchob, Army Chief General Anupong Paochinda, and Department of Special Investigation Tharit Pengdit were all on the list of assassination targets.

Asked if the emergency rule should be extended or not, the Deputy Prime Minister responded that the Government would monitor and assess the situation according to actual conditions, without taking into account any unconfirmed reports. He said the security law could be cancelled whenever the situation allows normal laws to be enforced.

Meanwhile, Opposition Pheu Thai Party Spokesperson Prompong Nopparit denounced the assassination plot. He then condemned the Government for failing to oversee the situation because unrest incidents were still instigated in areas with the state of emergency enforcement.
