taninthai Posted September 6, 2010 Author Share Posted September 6, 2010 First of all that's not "data" but speculation, I certainly don't remember a check box on my arrival card for whether I am a sex tourist or not. Secondly, even if we accept those numbers as fact, then it just confirm the OP's opinion that the sex tourist is a small minority. I have a vague recollection of having seen fugures of 30-40 million tourists arriving in Thailand annualy(correct me if Im wrong), which would mean that sex tourists only make up 2.5 - 3.5 percent of all tourists. A far cry from the picture some people are painting, that the only reason anyone would chose to go to Thailand are for the Thai women. The line between "sex tourists" and "normal" tourists is blurry anyway. I'm sure that there are plenty of men coming to thailand with the purpose of playing golf (or whatever), that end up also falling victim to the charms of the local women. I don't know if there is an official definition of a "sex tourist", but personally I would agree that it would depend on the intent/purpose of the journey. Not being a mindreader I can only guess who is and who isn't a sex tourist, and I don't really care anyway. To each their own I am, of course, only talking about consenting adults here, exploitation of children is a whole other discussion. Sophon No, there is some data there, as opposed to virtually every other of the posts that so far are total speculation. But I will concede it's not hard data, so to speak. In terms of it being a minority, of course. I don't think anyone with much sense would say that a majority of people coming to visit Thailand are sex tourists. What was your comment again ? My comment, again, was that backpackers like to visit Thailand just as much as the other countries listed. Maybe you should re-read the posts in very slow mode. If you go to Thailand (or any other country) with the primary purpose of having sexual encounters, or a primary purpose of having sexual encounters, then I'd say you're a sex tourist. If you go to Thailand because of an interest in its culture, history, national parks, beaches, etc., and while there you happen to have sexual encounters, then I'd say you're not a sex tourist, it's just part of life. Families and married couples used to come to Thailand as an exotic, cheap holiday - the sex tourist industry was only in a small, few areas and either they didn't know about it - or it could be avoided. Things have changed. Its no longer an incredibly cheap holiday and its impossible to 'not see' all the Western men 'escorting' Thai women..... The first types of tourists (not counting military R&R) who came to Thailand in numbers were backpackers and sex tourists. Families & couples: NOWHERE to be seen. Even today there are many parallels between backpackers and sex tourists, even though they despise each other: Guess which groups are the first to return after the next over-hyped media event, be it a perceived political/safety issue, natural disaster or health event: yup.
