Weird New Traffic Lights At U Turn On The Airport Road

Featured Replies

Just been through the new lights at the first U Turn going north from the Toyota Dealership - after Boat Lagoon.

Wow this is a pretty bizarre junction concept, with three sets of overhead lights for three lanes - where two sets can be green and one red or even better, two sets red one green.

All this is very worrying given the local habit of using the most convenient lane at signal controlled junctions, irrespective of painted/signed lane markings.

Simultaneous red and green lights will always cause confusion; It's probably most dangerous at night when you cannot clearly see the fluorescent reflective straight on / U -Turn signs on the high overhead gantry, that 'explain' the role of the individual lane lights (which do not employ illuminated filter arrows).

This has to rank highly amongst the most worrying traffic layouts I've seen since the one-way system in Patong and the (in) famous traffic lights at Chalong Circle, which I recollect lasted for about less than a week before the junction was turned back into a roundabout.

Thai's don't even understand how a normal set of traffic lights work so God help them on this..... maybe should have some MiB handing out instructions to Thai's on how it works

Fact is there are way way too many cars for Phuket roads and there doesn't seem to be the infrastructure to do anything about it. Widening existing roads ISN"T the answer because Thai's have this fixation of driving in the outside lane because it makes them feel superior to being on the inside......you know losing face and all that <deleted>......

You have to ask why they have put these lights in at this spot, which wasn't IMO one of the major traffic problem areas.

When I last came back from the airport they had police directing the traffic here though the lights had been erected, and the queue of traffic towards Heroine's Monument was back almost to the Toyota Dealership.

It may of course join the list of unused lights on the island.

When the new bus station opens and they have yet more u-turn lights, the journey between Heroine's Monument and Phuket Town is going to be a lot more horrific than it is now.

I was waiting by the new lights today and some people were ignoring the red as they do in this country, most people respect traffic lights but there are quite a few that ignore them up to them!!!!!

dam_n confusing, but the U turn is great for getting to BIS in the morning when driving southbound:rolleyes:
