So many of us are in Thailand. But how many of us are RICE QUEENS?

Surely you would think a greater percentage than are back home in Cleveland or Manchester, yes?

Then there is the aspect of situational rice queenery. This is Thailand, biggest rice basket in the world! When in Rome ...

(Title edit, s/b somebody asked not someday asked ...)

Rice (left); Queen (right)

Rice queen

A rice queen is usually a Gay Male who prefers or exclusively dates Asian men. The term is considered gay slang and depending on the context, may be considered derogatory and offensive internationally.

Similar to FARANG.

The key here is depends on CONTEXT. In the context I am using it here, in a gay forum populated by lots of proud RICE QUEENS, it isn't derogatory in the least.

Are you looking to be the Pedantic Queen?

Of the 104 people who viewed this 0 have commented they are proud rice queens(yourself included), but that's probably being pedantic again ! ..... Has anyone responed to the poll ? I guess I can check

Posting dictionary definitions without further comment kind of defines pedantic. Why did you do that unless to imply something negative? Is this about the topic or some kind of personal vendetta with you?

Counting the views? That's absurd. (I probably count for most of them as I keep checking back to see the results.) It is true not many gays in Thailand are very interested in this gay forum. However, of the gay foreigners in Thailand it doesn't take a genius to figure out that a lot of them are RQs, you can bet the house on that one.

Contradicting yourself and then having people point it out isn't as pedantic as you think ..... in a gay forum populated by lots of proud RICE QUEENS ........ It is true not many gays in Thailand are very interested in this gay forum.

It's nothing personal if it was someone else I would have posted the same thing\s

I think that since the term rice queen has several meanings that the "Queen" part is confusing to people it could mean the queen as in flamboyant or not, since as you pointed out it's pretty obvious that people who travel to Asia like Asians one would tend to think you wanted to know if people were "Queens" who liked Asians as opposed to finding out if people liked Asians more or less than other groups of people. But that's probably me being pedantic again.

Yes, it is indeed you being pedantic again. BTW, are you gay?

Isn't being pedantic enough ?

I guess I'll take that as a no. Why is it relevant? Well, if you aren't, then why are you interested in QUEENS? Sociology paper for school?

BTW, if I'm wrong and you are gay, and cute, and happen to be one of the 34 MATZAH QUEENS in the world (God bless them!) be sure to check out my profile (HotMatzahBallocks) on gaydar.

I was never a rice queen until I moved to Thailand. Now, when I go back to America, I am attracted to Asians everywhere. But it was the same when I went to France and lived in an Arab neighborhood -- I could see no one but the beurres for a while.

... It is true not many gays in Thailand are very interested in this gay forum. ...

and why do you think that is?

Check who posts most often on this gay forum and delights in petty put downs of other opinions

Check who has dominated this thread with his own opinions and private spats

This is a forum for public debate NOT a private chat room and those few who still use it maybe, just maybe, would like to see a thread or two that does not have one individual's scribblings every other post.

Is there a mirror in your room?

Thanks for your opinion but this place was dead BEFORE I posted a lot to it, so I don't think there is any evidence that it is poorly attended because of me. On the contrary actually, as once in a while one of my threads here gets a lot interest, such as the ladyboy attraction poll. I don't believe people are afraid of posting here because of me. Again, on the contrary, I should be afraid to post here for all the vicious SNIPING I seem to attract. Am I STOPPING anyone, including YOU, from starting threads here and/or posting all you want? I agree with you, too many of the threads are started by me. That isn't my fault. It is the fault of everyone who IS NOT participating.

You know what? There is something I could do to test your opinion against mine. I could stop posting on the gay forum for a month here and then we could see this magical blossoming of it you imagine will happen if I go away. But guess, what, I don't believe in magic, I won't bother doing that because I am certain it wouldn't make any difference. So for you and others who are complaining about me posting here, get a clue -- POST YOURSELF.

I really don't think being a Rice Queen means you're queeny (of course it also doesn't mean you aren't).

BTW -- I think I may have coined a new phrase here -- situational rice queenery -- not to imply it is that great or will become a cultural icon, but it may be novel.

There are not enough categories and subcategories. So much for diversity. :o

There should be white rice queens, those that like the unhealthy pallor of the Bangkok residents. And then there is the healthier brown rice variety. You older guys do need your fibre if you wish to remain regular. And what about wild rice? It is a delectable treat and is only found in the hinterlands. However the harvest is the exciting part. And then there are rice krispies. These are the older dried out rice people. That's why they go snap, crackle, and pop when devoured. Nothing says elderly love like popping a disc or cracking a joint when being frisky.

Personally, I avoid rice since the good jasmine quality is hard to find because its so valuable it gets exported :annoyed:

LOL! I like both rice and potatos, but I find it difficult in Thailand to avoid rice at all. In fact, I do like rice but wouldn't mind a potato sometimes. I wouldn't call myself a "rice queen" because of that "queen" part of the phrase.

How/where do you connect with potatos? I found that at the usual bars, everybody is only interested in rice.

Choice sticky potatoes are exotic rarities in Thailand. Life is a trade off.

Is a sticky potatoe similar to a sticky date (as in sticky date pudding)?

Obviously you weren't in the signal corps and can't decipher super secret codes.

Sweet potatos it is. A potato should never be sticky unless it has cheese and most people can do without the cheese.

And now to make people's teeth fall out from the sappiness of this, but when one is lucky enough to find one's true love, no matter what one's preferences may have been, the preferences will change if the heart makes the love ingredient. Love is that powerful, I iz romantic.

Before I moved to Thailand, I was here as a tourist. And I had an English boyfriend. Yes, we were looked at in a funny way, nobody would understand why two farangs stick together.

Very exotic indeed.

Truer words were never spoken. Well, probably they were, but you do have a point.

My BF knows the type I like (he sees my eyes, ahem) and keeps saying that he doesn't conform to my "specs". Which are youngish (20-25 years), dark skin, slim, etc. BF is mid-thirties, light skin (Thai-Chinese), among other descrepancies.

But still, I wouldn't want to exchange him for anybody.

I have dated both locals and foreigners in every country in which I have lived. As it happens, there are more Asians living in this country and therefore the odds are greater that I would be meeting and socialising with them. My reasons are already explained on Peaceblondie's thread asking why more foreigners don't date foreigners here.

In the US, 'rice-queen' has also become a politicised term which implies a tendency towards exploitation and orientalisation of Asians by non-Asians, positioning them as the 'exotic' 'other' rather than as human beings with similar needs, desires, wants, histories, etc. I think anyone who has actually integrated a bit with the real local cultural and linguistic norms would no longer qualify under this meaning of the term, though persons who have never managed to change how they encounter locals from the manners of the typical tourist might well still claim this form of the term...
