"เชื่อลมปาก"

Featured Replies

Lexitron contains a bit of a curious entry:

เชื่อลมปาก [V] believe in one's words

Syn. เชื่อคำพูด

Def.

The English definition appears to be reflexive, as if the meaning were "self-delusional" or "to believe your own bull".

However, the Thai definition seems to mean to fall for someone else's bull,

"to believe in or to trust something that was spoken to persuade you to act in a certain manner"

The example might be rendered as:

"If you believe what he is telling you, you will be sorry afterward."

Perhaps the English definition should be, "to believe someone's claims"

What do you think?

The google hit on it only brings up hits related to dodgy politicians (well they all are aren't they?). The one entry that is related to sport is about Silvio Berlusconi, sports club owner and dodgy geezer.

I think you're right David. It should probably be :

เชื่อลมปาก [V] believe in someone's words/claims

To fool yourself would be:

หลอกตัวเอง

ลมปาก means คำพูด

I think it is an idiom often used in a negative sense due to unreliably known behavior of someone.

ใครเชื่อลมปากนักการเมือง ก็คงโง่สิ้นดี

Perhaps it should be rendered as

Whoever believes a politician's words is a fool.
