Work Permit For Part Time Job

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm about to get an non-immigrant Visa type O from Laos.

I plan to get a work permit 1 year after getting this visa. I work for a student organization, so the job description will be "Volunteering".

I also think about doing a half-time job (web design) besides that. So my question is: Is my work permit also value for this job? (probably not...)

If not, is it possible to add another job description at my current work permit?

My concern is that the Non-Immigant Visa type O won't be value for the web design half-time job. Is that true? If yes, is it possible to get a Non-Imm B from Penang instead (i read it is easier there)?

Sorry for these many questions, even if you answer only one, I would be happy!!! I'm quite confused with the Thai law...

I'm 24 and originally from Germany.

Thanks again,

Damnum

Simple, Thai law says any work requires a work permit; full-time, part-time, volunteering makes no difference. The work classification or job title is clearly stated on each work permit. Your visa and work permit are two separate issues handled by two different departments of the Thai government and most work permits are issued against a non-immigrant "B" visa.

Each job/volunteer work requires a work permit of its own.

For your paid work you need to have an incoem of 50,000 baht a month before immigration will give you an extension of stay, if you don't have that income you have to get multiple non-B visas and do a border run every 90 days. I doubt it if immigration will extend based on volunteering if you also have paid work.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your quick replies.

I just googled about the topic and http://www.siamallservices.com/visaandworkpermit.html says the following:

1. Application Fee 100 Baht

2. Work Permit Fee 3 Months or Less 750 Baht

3-6 Months 1,500 Baht

6-12 Months 3,000 Baht

3. Temporary Permit Document 500 Baht

4. Change/Add Job Description 1,000 Baht

5. Change/Add Employer 3,000 Baht

6. Change/Add Work Location 1,000 Baht

Change/Add Work Permit Condition 150 Baht

Doesn't that mean I can add a job description to my work permit for 1.000 Baht (or add employer, not sure) and can do both jobs?

If that is the case, would it be better to apply for a non-imm B in order to have the opportunity to add the paid job to the work permit?

Thx a lot

Yes, you can add a second job to your work permit, but your first employer has to agree with it and has to put this in writing.

I think your problem will be that you can only work for a qualified employer, so you cannot just add "self-employed web designer" to your work permit!

You'd need to find a qualified employer first, meaning enough Thai nationals on the staff and enough registered capital, and then get employed by them. This job can then get added onto your work permit.

You'd be better of with a non immigrant B visa.

Do note that you can apply for a work permit on any type of visa. Labor department will not issue the work permit yet, but you will receive a form WP3. With this form along with all the paperwork of your employer (paid job or volunteering) you can travel to pretty much any embassy/consulate, including Laos, and receive your non immigrant B visa. When you then return to Thailand, labor department will then issue you with your work permit.

You would add an employer, or which you need to have an employer first and as has been mentioned you need permission from the first employer.

The non-O or non-B will make no difference for applying for a work permit.

  • 1 year later...

hi everyone,

So basiclaly if I have a Non-B visa (have to report back to immigration every 90 days) right now and a work permit working for a company, If I want to apply for a part-time, for example working at starbucks, I need permission from my first employer to apply for the job? and if that works, that part-time job would be added into my work permit?

What is the process for applying a part-time job? and what are the requirements? I can't stand this company anymore...I need to find another place at least to work in a different environment.

I right now, I have a work permit under the companies name, and also I have to apply for re-entry visas each time leaving the country, but every 90 days I have to reaply again...

Thanks for the time!^^

It is a bit unclear what you want.

You need approval from your employer to also work for another employer and ADD that other employer to the workpermit. A letter of approval from your first employer will be enough.

If you want to work for a new employer and quit you old job, than you simply cancel your employement and apply for a new work permit for working for the new employer. Your permision to stay is another story, as that will be cancelled when you quit your job. You than can go to immigration to have it cancelled and can get 7 days for 1,900 baht to submit a new application for an extension of stay based on your new employement or leave the country.

7 days might be too short, in which case you need to leave the country and apply for a new non-B visa.

Edit:

I think you reprot your address every 90 days.

Hi there thanks for the reply!

I think what I meant was that I am currently working in my own family's company, and this is where I got my work permit. But I would like to apply for a part-time job as well, not full time, so basically like I work in my company until like evening? then if possible, I'd like to look for a part time job that works during the nights or some other days. So what I want is like I want a part-time job, but also keeping my current one.

I haven't thought about quitting this current job...but I'm just looking for any possibilities where I can also add a part-time job.

Thanks ^^

"Than yes, you need permission from the current employer for the second job."

The Labor Office will also require all of the same paperwork for the second job as they did for the first one. Plus the permission as stated above, of course.

Than yes, you need permission from the current employer for the second job.

Do realize that some jobs, like seliing things in a shop, are restricted to Thai nationals only.

so what kinds of jobs are suitable for foreigners? what are the differences?

You can find a list of jobs you are not allowed to do here:

It is not up to date, but gives you a good impression.
