Marriage ban on officials revoked

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet yesterday revoked a Communist-era rule barring government officials from marrying or having relationships with illegal immigrants or refugees, saying the law was a violation of human rights.

The National Security Council proposed the change.

However, officials serving with military units or any agency tasked with national security would be transferred if they married or had a livein relationship with illegal immigrants or refugees.

The Cabinet issued three regulations in 1977, 1981, and 1984 which constituted an overall restriction barring civilians, police and soldiers from marriage or relationships with Vietnamese refugees, to prevent the granting of Thai nationality to those refugees.

"...an overall restriction barring civilians, police and soldiers from marriage or relationships with Vietnamese refugees, to prevent the granting of Thai nationality to those refugees."

From the look of things these days it seems like some Thai government officials, civilians, police and soldiers suffered from too much in-breeding.
