You know , of course , Ian , when you talk of 'Balance ' you need to remember that you keep that balance by returning to your civilised part of the world where you are surounded by most of what you need , people of a different stripe and many fond memories , I have a Dutch friend who decided that was the only way he could keep his sanity and still enjoy Thailand , too long enjoying insanity makes one quite insane oneself is how he put it , now he travels back and forth a couple of times a year . Many posters on TV cannot afford that luxury , indeed , many have found themselves unable to enjoy even some of the simple pleasures they used to , some even 'Forced'to live in a village just to survive , unable to put aside even a paltry few quid to go anywhere .Yes , it is easy when you can afford the easy life , but this is no longer available to many for whatever the reason .where other than the local store or bar .

Waht you say is true. I wouldn't be so happy if I was restricted to staying in one location...ANYWHERE. But, my modest pension is enough to keep me happy if I budget my funds. A return ticket to Thailand only costs about $1300, and anyone who can't afford that would probably be better off in Thailand. I know Paris is MUCH more expensive than just about anywhere in Thailand... and that's just for rentals. At my age I know my options of having a lovely young woman to take care of me are a big fat zero in North America.

I lived and worked just below the ring road of Paris for 7 months and I thoroughly disliked the place.

The RTR and the Metro were good but the rental I paid was high, the food I bought at the supermarket and cooked at home was good and the bread and butter fantastic but outside in the evenings I had to go a long way to the centre of Paris if I wanted to drink as the bars locally closed around 8 pm though in most of the cafe/bars you could start drinking around 4 am.

Outside of Paris France is a real country and it is like saying Bangkok is Thailand.

It isn't and never will be.

I have to give Tartemtion credit for being honest. i have been to LOS 6 times, and i have had most of the feelings Tartemtion have.

I feel things are getting a little better for every visit. The reason I came back time after time, is for family reasons.

What is very good about LOS is the climate, low crime and low prices.

I have often asked myself, would i visit this country if it was as expensive as Europe?

I have to say that I think the French drive and park worse than the average Thai Taxi driver! I have driven in Paris a few times and found it very hard going. and The French Temper! jeeeeez, give me a nutter Thai women any day. (you need to read the other thread to know what im talking about there)

French food on the other hand is great, I love the stuff. one thing I miss about France is sitting outside cafes eating! but Thailand is for me the best place I have lived even if it does get on my nerves once in a while!

If you like to live in the city, why not Bangkok it has some of the best restaurants and night life in the world, beats Paris hands down in my book anyday, you can buy a pass for the public transport just the same.

A one bedroom condo in Bangkok, would be a 10th of the price of Paris.

When I read an OP like this, it does make me wonder what brought the OP to Thailand in the first place. What sort of expectations did he have? Was his first visits to Thailand to Pattaya and other tourist places only? Did he think that all Thai women were like Thai bargirls? Did he really believe that he was a "hansum man?" Did he not know that Thailand was a developing nation? Did he not know about the visa laws? When somebody becomes this disenchanted with Thailand, it's usually because the reality couldn't live up to the expectations. I hope his expectations of life in Paris--or anywhere else--is a little more realistic. Otherwise, I doubt he will ever find true happiness.

When i push my baby down the pavement in her pushchair im dodging in and out of dumb idiots on motorbikes driving along at speeds up to somewhere near 30MPH, then when i cross the road there are a high percentage of drivers who im sure would sooner run us over then slow down and do the humane thing of letting someone with a baby cross the road.

For the little ones safety i'll be going back to Blighty when i choose, that and the fact i can put her in the best girls school in England for 7500 GBP rising to 15,000 GBP a year aged 11 an education the elites of Thailand wish for their offspring.

Agreed, Paris is ti France, as BKK is to Thailand. But its proximity to Reims, Epernay, Caan, Monaco, Cote D'Argent, Cote D'Azure are deffinately better.

From Paris you can take a train to the Alps and go Snow boarding, you can take a train or drive down to Caan for the film festival or even St Tropez for the beaches for of women (french women and other european women have very shapley and sizable breasts in their bikini! I've yet to see a stunning chesty french maiden paddling and playing on the beach in her jeans and long sleave tee shirt in the mid day sun.

I know many of you guys love thai ladies but I have a fondness for round pendulous breasts, naturally tanned skin, bottoms which don't look like they've been left in another pair of jeans etc...

I think Thailand is for specialists. My likes are broader and more varied so Euro-typical locations are attractive. Doesn't meant there isn't a place for thailand in my travels. But the west offers a richer diversity. I don't think thats up for dispute, is it?

Thats all great, i love traveling around Europe as well, but you really going to need the $$$$$$$$$$$ to do all that, last time i was in St Tropez a coffee in a cafe near the beach was something like 8 euro

I understand everything you are feeling and only wish my husband did too... every day i am becoming more and more disillusioned and depressed with a place that I once referred to as paradise. A long break back in blighty will hopefully make me feel the same again and make me realise why we came here in the first place but without my husband agreeing i fear this downward spiral will continue for a while to come...

wow Im not alone. Just got back from Spain and London visiting family and friends and am now thinking of leaving. Thailand is cool but its sooo fake. Its all about how you look not who you are.Thai food, smiling, poor trying to be rich, rich trying to show they care about poor, everything, even the beaches are shit compared to other tropical places.

I know this may offend but alot of it makes no common sense and after coming back from 3 countries that do, I realise the amount of stress thats been lifted. It seems Thailand is not a stressful place when you're in it but unless youre retired I really think it is. I was in Malaysia last week (transit) and seeing the Africans, greeks expats etc going to college working normal jobs it showed me how badly we get treated here. And to be honest who has any real friendships with Thais. I see many mates but not really. Not because they are not friendly it just seems to different therefore comfort is found in some level ground fake polite place.

Some things about the culture I will just not get. The selfishness of Thais generally is quite amazing. My friend in London is Thai as are his parents and theyve told me they would never move back no matter how rich.
