How did you all do with songkran?

I sold 24 pigs at 62thb in batches of 4-6. After each day I transfered all profits to hongtong, 40 and chang. ;-)daily routine: clean and feed,drink, sell, drink eat, drink, feed, sing, drink. lots of fun:-):-):-):-) (and lots of hongtong)

today 4 buyers came but I have no 90+kg left.:':'(. but in 2-3 weeks another 15 will be ready.

We have sold around 55 pigs during the last 14 days. In the beginning at 66 bath and the last week at 68. Buyers complain that it is to expensive, but they have to buy, or even lose more money due to not have any meet to sell. With 140 bath at the market, 68 bath/kg seams to be a fair gate price. Correct me if i'm wrong. The problem is that, they don't make as good profit as they use to do and that's why they complain. It looks like it is a better balance now, be twine pigs on the farms and buyers.

We are also low on 100 kg pigs (even 90kg) :D

we only have 6 pigs, ( this is trial 2, after the first 2...start small?)

wife is now ready to sell, looking for buyer.

i think we will be content with 60-62thb/kg, though the more the merrier, it seems our prices tend to be bellow those you mention in the past, expect the same this time too.

we are in Chaiyaphum province.

when sold, will give an update on summary.

start small, did i say?

6 is a small number, a small start up cost, and manageble time/work for wife even when i work abroad.

we dont plan it a standalone income, rather a sideline along other things.

and the update:

she sold the smallest 2, 63thb/kg, and got deposit for the other 3, at the same price, delivered within around 10 days.

will give a final on cost and total income once all that done.

just got 7 out of the door at 60 not far from khon kaen,

another 20 to go in about 2 months

down to 1 sow and not planning to get any more than that,

it has become a pain in the arse.

selling cheap, very little profit,

only good thing is the amount of shit i got in the last two years has saved a lot in fertilizer

Humblefarang, If you did not do so already, take a look at what other local small pigfarmers are doing. With last years low prices almost every small pigfarmer around here quit. Now there are only cp, betagro, the agricultural office farm, me and two others. Since cp does not sell to local butchers, the agr.off farm sells now at prices higher then cp, I can sell at 66-67 thb-kg. And they are queing for my pigs. Of course you have to deliver quality. Like many thing pig prices are cyclical and are governed by market.

Retrospectivaly last years low prices were possitive for me since it forced my competitors out allowing me to build a bigger consumer base. If you are in amy kind of farming you will have lean years and good years. The trick is to make an average nice profit capatalizing on the good years. But farming is no way to make a quick buck.

Sorry if I sound condescending, just trying to advice and share my thoughts that bad years don't have to be 'bad'. That said 60thb/kg should be a nice profit. If not your costs are too high and ypu should reduce them or get out.

Its not enough. You have to calculate with very low price from September to new year.

BTW, we can still sell at 65 bath/kg up in Phimai. CP:s price is from 66.5 up to 68 bath/kg in Isaan. While in Bkk is as low as 63 - 64.

hi Revar,i bought 2 of them last month(brothers),that were about 5 months + we did not weigh them, when brought to my farm they did not eat much for a while and lost some weight,i bought 1 for me and 1 for Brabo (Frank),i described the to Frank what they looked like, and he chose to take the slightly smaller 1 because it had bigger marking on it,when i took it to him it was put on the scales because it was being boxed for transport,it was 87 kilo.s,, he was very happy with it, i am not at the farm now,but my wife thinks he should be around 110-120 kilo,but her eyes are not to well .lol, when the pictures were taken he was nearly 7 months ,this picture is from the farm where my wife bought them,there were 4 boars and 1 gilt,she had the pick of the 2 she wanted,as the farmer was keeping 1 boar for his self, i like the look of the gilt ,but to expensive,and cash is hard for me at the moment,sad.png

As RBH says, volume counts. I always have bwtween 100 and 120 pigs. This way you have a steady income and can discounts on feed. I get discounts from both my Betagro dealer and SPM dealer. First discount for 30+ bags. And more for 300+ and 500+ bags. (They won't normally offer, you have to negotiate. Using two different brands and they knowing it helps a lot;-))

You alsp have to count on some deads, if you have only a few pigs this means instand loss. With more you just make a smaller average profit.

Even a 10thb discount adds up with high volume.

Last year I made an average profit of 970thb a pig. I had between 60-80 pigs most of the time then. In the good periods 1500-2000thb in the bad periods just a few hunderd. I expect to do better this year.

But you have to love it, its a lot of work of you want to get premium prices.

a pig was visiting another pig in hospital he went to the ward where the other pig was recovering , he went up to the desk and asked the doctor which bed was the other pig was in and he escorted him to the bed and said I've got some good news mr ham is CURED

Yesterday the other 4 pigs were taken too,
So, as promised, here is the update on the final numbers:
(2 pigs were taken 2 weeks ago about...)
pigs were 75-83-90-93-93-99kg...
selling price: 63THB/kg ( few baht extra for the later 4 to keep longer on farm)
total from selling = 33625THB

costs:
41 bags of feed( 1230kg) = 19625THB
pigs cost 1200THB each...= 7200THB
total cost = 26825THB

total profit = 6800THB or 1133THB/pig
notes:
the smallest pig was only taken as we bought pigs from F-I-L, we wont take such next time, that is clear already.
pigs also got bakbung, kratin and some banana trunk along their pellett feed. this probably helped some to have 2.3 FCR...the feed company's sales team were having 2.4-2.5 FCR as estimate.
extra is a big pile of poo to fertilize the veggie garden.
(growing period was around 4 months 1 week).

it isnt much money, and wifey( and a bit me, when i was around) had to work some with them daily, but it is a neat little side income, and moreover a #2 positive experiment with pigs.
maybe the next time we can go for something in the 10-15 range, yet not sure when it will be, maybe will try something to finish around next february-march?

Hi Tingtong 1200 baht is a good price for piglets,how big were they when you bought them,

i am reducing my growing right know, the profit was not bad, anything better than losses, we take care of it our selves, i may be landing a job soon here hence reducing the swine in the house.

the market its not too bad around here, in fact i have a mate here that kills pigs for a living that has a 80pig order for some weeding and stuff like that mine are too small to kill, price is 62 a kilo

Pig farmers up in arms over US pressure

BANGKOK: - Members of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand and other concerned parties are considering marching to Government House in protest against US pressure on Thailand to open up its market to US pork and offal.

Surachai Sutthitham, president of the association, yesterday said pig farmers nationwide would write to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra asking the government for protection measures against attempts to export US pork products to the Kingdom.

Through the US Embassy in Bangkok, agencies representing that country's farmers and exporters have recently sought to pressure the government to open up the market to their pork and offal goods.

The move has raised an alarm bell among Thai pig raisers, as the US government subsidises its farmers to strengthen their export competitiveness, which means they can impose lower retail prices than local producers in overseas markets are able to do.

"The raising of pigs is an important occupation in Thailand, and one that has upgraded the standard of living of farmers for decades. Farmers are now also able to produce high-quality meat to serve domestic demand, and they sometimes face oversupply," Surachai said.

He argued that if the government allowed the United States to access the Thai market, it would result in a serious oversupply situation and bring down domestic prices. This in turn would force Thai farmers to shut down operations, as they would not be able to shoulder big losses.

Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan have already opened up their markets for US pork, which is priced much lower than local production and has pulled farm-gate prices down to an average of Bt50 per kilogram, he said.

As a result, many farmers in the three countries are facing bankruptcy as their main source of income dries up, he added.

He said that besides Washington's export-subsidy policy strengthening its farmers' international competitiveness, the United States would also export the unwanted parts of its pigs, such as the head, feet and offal.

Moreover, the use of chemicals such as ractopamine and carbadox - fed to pigs to turn their meat into a redder product - is allowed by the US government, whereas such use is prohibited in Thailand, Surachai said.

"The import of US pork would confuse Thai consumers, as they would not be able separate Thai products from US pork, which would result in a high health risk due to the use of these chemicals," he insisted.

Moscow does not permit the sale of US pork, despite Russia's high growth in pork consumption. Moscow's policy is based on the need to ensure food safety and people's health, Surachai said.

Somchai may want to check some of his statements as to "truth in brain washing" and/or newsprint.

Live market price does indicate pork can/is being produced cheaper in the US than here in Thailand, but that is true of beef, chicken and most farm pproducts. Eventually Thailand is going to have to accept change to stay competative, but the best place to start may be with the National monopolies which fairly well control the market place, one way or another.

I do not foresee imported frozen pork from the US happening, but now if the smoked tidbits were allowed in without a huge tax, I would appreciate the chance to buy quality product which does not seem avaliable here, from the monopolies.

there is a lot of talk around here, get a land race to mix with duroc will give you fast growing piglets,

some say the say has to be pure race to start off with,

I would start with a pure race sow. What breed depending a bit on the available boar or sperm. Often a pure Duroc.Later you can use gilts as a new sow.

My experience with growers.

Duroc and duroc-landrace grow quick until 90 kg. If you have a market for 70kg-100 kg they are great. For me 10-100 in 120 days average.

Largewhite and largewhite-duroc are great for 120+kg. They grow large but not fat until 90kg after which they quickly gain bulk. They take a bit longer but in. 5 months they grow bigger then duroc-Landrace.
