Thai court orders extradition of British murder suspect

BANGKOK, September 30, 2010 (AFP) - A Thai court Thursday ordered the extradition of a British man wanted in his homeland on suspicion of beating a friend to death before fleeing overseas.

Stuart Scott Crawford, 44, thought to be on Britain's most wanted list as the prime suspect in the September 2008 murder of Michael Ryan, has lived in Thailand for the last two years with his Thai wife.

The court said he will now be sent to Britain within 90 days, although not during the next 30 days to allow for an appeal to be lodged.

He was arrested in August in a continuing crackdown on foreign criminal suspects in Thailand, as the prime holiday destination seeks to shed its image as something of a haven for those seeking to evade the law.

I always wonder why there has to be a chance for appeal? Why appeal? The authorities would not be filing for extradition if the case were not mostly proven to the Thai authorities.

The sooner they get him out of here the better.

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court Thursday ordered extradition of a Briton who is accused of having murdered a man in England.

The court ordered Stuart Scott Crawford to be extradited within 30 days.

Crawford was accused of murdering Michael Victor Ryan and stole 7,330 pounds from his ATM account before fleeing to Thailand on September 5 2008. He was arrested on December 30 2009.

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court yesterday approved London's request to extradite Briton, Stuart Scott Crawford, so he can be prosecuted for murder, fraud and theft on British soil.

The request stated that Crawford allegedly killed a friend in an argument, which stemmed from the friend's discovery of Crawford's fraudulent financial documents. The two had been sharing accommodation in Surrey.

Later, Crawford allegedly stole £6,500 (Bt311,863) from the victim's bank account before fleeing to Thailand on September 5, 2008. Since he was on Britain's most-wanted list, he was arrested in August.

The court said Crawford would be sent back to Britain in 90 days, though not during the next 30 days so he can lodge an appeal.

Extradited man pleads not guilty to Michael Ryan murder in Sutton

A 45-year-old man denied murdering a pensioner but admitted trying to transfer £6,500 of the victim's savings to his own account. Stuart Crawford is alleged to have bludgeoned his friend Michael Ryan to death at the 67-year-old's flat in Sutton. Mr Ryan, a retired heating and ventilating engineer, was found dead on September 10, 2008.

His body was discovered wrapped in a carpet beneath a bookcase at the property in Laurel Manor, Devonshire Road. It is believed Crawford was living with the victim in the weeks before the death. Crawford is accused of killing Mr Ryan between September 1 and September 6, 2008.

He was arrested in the resort of Pattaya in Thailand in August last year and returned to the UK in January. He appeared before Judge Richard Hone QC via videolink from Belmarsh Prison and pleaded not guilty to murder. Judge Hone set a trial for September 22 this year.
