Grenade attack injures 14 people in Mexico's drug-plagued north

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- A grenade explosion injured 14 people, including six children, on Saturday when suspected drug cartel members threw it into the main square of a municipality near the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, officials said.

According to police, the attack occurred around 10:15 p.m. local time (11:15 p.m. EDT) on Saturday in front of the Guadalupe city hall, a suburb of the industrial city of Monterrey.

Earlier Saturday, three grenades were detonated in Monterrey, including one near the U.S. consulate and another outside a government building. A third was detonated outside a prison.

The attack on the Guadalupe main square was the first against civilians in Nuevo Leon state and although deliberate attacks against civilians are not common in Mexico, there has been violent incidents at public events.

On September 15, 2008 a grenade attack during the Independence celebration in the western city of Morelia left seven people dead and more than 100 injured
