US to pledged support for Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis

WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – The United States on Tuesday announced that it plans to make a three-year pledge of support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis.

The U.S. also called for smart investments and shared responsibility to reach the goal of saving more lives efficiently and effectively. The government led by President Barack Obama intends to seek $4 billion for the Fund for 2011 through 2013 as part of its continuing support to the cause.

The unprecedented pledge represents a 38 percent increase in the investment in comparison to the previous three-year period. The significant increase was made due to the overall budget challenges and represents the largest increase of any donor nation in the current year.

The Obama Administration set three goals tied to the pledge: save more lives by driving needed reforms and ensuring smart, effective investments; leverage other donor nation's contributions in order to save more lives, increase life expectancy and ease suffering; and continue demonstrating U.S. leadership in the ultimate measurement of success.

With the contributions of the U.S. and other donor nations, the Global Fund aims at reaching various targets by 2015 including 4.4 million people on antiretroviral therapy, 2.5 million orphans and vulnerable children supported annually, 3.9 million annual tuberculosis treatment regimens, 110 million insecticide-treated bed nets for malaria prevention, and attention to 610,000 HIV-positive pregnant women.
