Can You Trust Thais With Your Secrets?

hi chaps/chappes's

been in thailand about 4 years and my

experience has been....don't!

my most recent case was a thai asked

me why i was going to town

i said to buy some cigarettes

exactly 10 seconds later he anounced

to everyone in the room hes going to

town to buy cigarettes!!!!

well, it so happens im in a strict monastery

and such things are really frowned upon

if done very discreetly-theres no problem

now people see me as an evil doer

my conclusion is the asians and particularly

thais have no ability to keep secrets-even doing

it to their own kind

i would say that if they do tell others- they

would be praised for it and given respect

for "sharing" interesting info

whats your experience?

I wouldn't trust anybody with the secret about my rash.

Oh, wait!

You've shared the rash with half the population of Pattaya, so I don't see how its a secret.

I usually read the most ridiculous posts in the general forum but this has to take the biscuit!!! What a pointless post!

Yes, your right.

Your post is pointless!

The op is not far off, I tend not to tell anyone over here especially the locals any secrets. I don't think it's coz there no good at keeping a secret, more to do with it being more exciting than anything else they spoke about that day.

You must be referring to your own post. Trust me, it's no secret.

The guy says he's in a 'strict monastery'???!!!

So in a 'strict monastery' he's allowed to use the internet at 7.30pm is he? And if he is in a 'strict monastery' then he wouldn't be going out to buy cigarettes anyway would he?! And even if he was would it be worthy of a post about how Asians, especially Thais, can't keep secrets?

He was just testing your astuteness.

Nowt to do with astuteness. It's just another example of somebody starting a post to ridicule and belittle Thailand and it's people and, even though it's obviously nonsense, people are eager to agree with it and compliment it. And then when someone dares to post something that doesn't 'high five' the OP they are chastised. No skin of my nose though.

A couple of things;

1] the original poster failed to use capital letters & appropriate punctuation. Nonetheless, the fact that the original post was broken up into quite small pieces, made it easier to read & understand.

-2 for bad grammar/laziness.

2] In my experience, Thais are known to gossip about anything...especially about something that is extraordinary. Again & in my experience, if one is concerned about such gossip, one only needs to highlight this fact. For example, "I'm going to the shop to buy some cigarettes & I know how you Thais gossip about anything & everything."

This comment is usually embarrassing enough to promote a reaction (usually negative) but the end result is that they do not wish to be seen as 'idle gossipers'.

How do I know this works?

I once had a problem with a work permit & the Thai speculation was incredible! This all stopped when I forthrightly said that "Thais gossip far too much about anything & everything, without knowing the facts".They lost face deservingly...& they never said another word, in front of me or behind my back.

hi

the example was just a simple harmless

topic starter

ive a whole pile of previous insidents

got me pissed off enough to write something

theres a very big difference between a strict monastery and a very strict one

practically everyones got a secret

and sometimes its not wise to broadcast it

its not a bad thing to have a friend you could

unload something thats been troubling you

discuss it and get relief/help/assistance

sometimes its very neccessary to do that

but if one is worried about the person telling

others or using it against you-well, its better

to keep quiet

i spent a couple of years in sri lanka

i came across reports of cases of suicide due

to the fact that the troubled person couldnt

find anyone to talk to about their problem

because in 5 minutes the whole village would know

for those without a visa

they better keep the mouth closed

not all thais love ferangs

and some money could be made telling

the right person

No, never trust Thai people, only trust Farangs. blink.gif

Let me know how you get on.

Yes, you are right.

This is a stupid thread because in fact who in this world could we actually trust other than our parents and children maybe?

I TOLD you we shouldn't have spent that night together. But, you insisted.

Definately not,as anyone who has lived in a village will already know.

Talking about everyone, and disclosing information, and confidences: is IMO a National Sport!

Everywhere and everyone the same not only Thailand and/or Thais, the moment you tell them that it is a secret they going to tell everyone.:)

Keep the story low profile, never wisper keep your voice on the same volume level and most important "never tell it is a secret"and it should be ok.

Or not.:(
