Baht weakens ahead of possible measures to curb its rise

The baht weakened to Bt 30.07 per US dollar on Monday amid anticipation that the government may implement tough measures to curb the strong baht, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT)'s Deputy Governor, Paiboon Kittisrikangwan.

Currency traders expect the baht to remain in a narrow range, trading between Bt 29.80 and Bt 30.20 per US dollar this week.

The BoT may relax limits on capital outflows and increase support for local exporters tackling with the strong baht, Prime Minister Abhisit said.

The BoT's Monetary Policy Committee will meet on Wednesday to decide if any action should be taken to stabilise the baht's value.

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

UN urges crackdown on child pornography

By The Nation

The UN Children's Fund (Unicef) on Monday urged the Thai government to crack down on child pornography, which is widely available in Bangkok.

"The sale of such material is a blatant and serious violation of children's rights, and it must not be tolerated for another day," said Tomoo Hozumi, the Unicef representative in Thailand.

Despite the media exposure, there has been no crackdown on the illicit trade. Street stall operators are said to pay the police monthly fees for permission to use public sidewalks for their trade, often in illegal items such as pornography and pirated DVDs and CDs.

"Thailand has made great progress in protecting children from sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse," Hozumi said. "But by not responding quickly to these reports, it is in danger of damaging its reputation as a country that is working hard to stop the exploitation of children."

Selling pornographic material is a criminal offence in Thailand carrying a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment and a maximum fine of 6,000 baht (200 dollars).

Prostitution is also illegal in Thailand, but the sex trade is ubiquitous in certain districts of Bangkok and beach resorts such as Pattaya.

Border Authorities on Lookout for Bomb Suspects

Immigration police are keeping a watchful eye out for two suspects in the Nonthaburi apartment bombing thought to be trying to flee the Kingdom with Saraburi police deepening their investigation into the case of two others arrested in possession of explosives.

Photographs of two suspects linked to the apartment building explosion last week in Nonthaburi province are being circulated among border police in Songkhla province in hope of apprehending the two if they attempt to leave the country.

All of Songkhla's security units bordering Malaysia have been instructed to keep a lookout for the two suspects identified as Kasi Ditthanarat and Amporn Jaikon.

Authorities have admitted that due to the ongoing Vegetarian Festival, a heavy traffic of people are traveling through Thailand's southern border, making it difficult to sreen them all.

Meanwhile, in Saraburi province, police are intensifying their investigation into the case of two men arrested for stashing weapons, TNT and explosive devices in their resort room. The suspects claimed all the weapons were left with them by a friend.

Police are attempting to establish a possible link between the suspects and violent incidents in Bangkok. They said the two suspects are part of a known drug ring.
