Went to buy, as a joke, the new, Everton, radio-active pink, away shirt on Saturday for a mate. If you don't know the shirt, it is so hideously revolting not even a color-blind, bottom feeder would wear it. He's a scouser, though, so he might.

Anyway, went to the shop at the foot of the Bts stairs near Suk 7/1, the one that sells said shirts, muay Thai stuff and cases etc. Said I'd like an Everton shirt while I was on the street outside, and was given a look that implied I was as disgusting as the shirt I wanted to buy by an off-duty ladyboy who worked there.

This thing, almost as objectionable to look at as the shirt and possibly on its period, then led me up to the top floor and pulled out the pink monstosity, ie the shirt.

I asked how much, and was told, wait for it, 800baht!!!!!

Time to speak Thai and let him know Iweren't a tourist, I thought. Said that's robbery and that I'd go and buy one in Pratunam for 300 max, and started to walk out. Was then chased down the stairs with said thing now offering the shirt/shit for 300. Couldn't be bothered to go elsewhere so bought it. When I asked about putting a name and number on it, however, I was given a straight, no can do. Oh well, it's gonna be your loss, not mine, I was thinking.

Once again, a bad shopping experience in Thailand. I ain't worried about paying a little extra as things are so cheap here. What is sad is that i'm a pretty regular customer here, what with mate's birthdays and 2 sons who want their teams 2 new kits evey year. Why do many Thai shopkeepers go out of their way to alienate their customers?

Times are hard enuf anyway. I ain't ever going back, and I hope a number of others don't as a result of this post.

Bad attitude and a blatant attempt at a rip off u8sually ain't good for business.

I know the shop you mean, i went in last year and asked about the new England shirt.

After waiting 20 minutes and then being presented with the worst looking copy i have ever seen he then had the cheek to quote me 2800 baht for it, i kid you not.

I got chased down the stairs to but when they try and rip me off to that extent no matter how much he brings down the price i aint gonna buy.

I've been living off and on in Thailand for the past 29 years and speak fluent Thai. I learned decades ago not to shop in tourist areas as the "attitude" has always been just what you described. Try going somewhere else other than Sukhumvit, to an area where foreigners are few, and you'll most likely receive a very courteous reply to your question from a very helpful and friendly shop assistant or owner. Sorry that I can't direct you to any specific shop as I haven't bought a footie shirt in ages.

I usually do but due to, even visually, this shirt being toxic, I went somewhere I was pretty sure they'd have it.

As for shop-service in general, however, I do find it generally pretty poor.

Mee Mai?

Mai mee. Mort layoh.

Sur dai, tee nai?

Mai loo!

Then they walk away.
