MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- A contractor helicopter serving Mexico's state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) crashed in southwestern Mexico on Friday afternoon, killing all eight people on board, officials said.

The Bell 212 helicopter took off from Ciudad del Carmen, a port city in Campeche state, and was bound for the town of Minatitlan in Veracruz state. It was registered to Heliservicios Campeche but was transporting Pemex employees at the time of the crash.

According to eyewitnesses, the aircraft caught fire in the air and crashed in the municipality of Las Choapas, in Veracruz state, killing six Pemex technicians and two pilots belonging to Heliservicios Campeche.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

On June 18, eleven soldiers were killed when a military Bell 412 helicopter crashed near Santiago Papasquiaro in Mexico's Durango state. The country's Ministry of Defense said the accident occurred during bad weather conditions in the area, killing a chief, four junior officers and six troops.
