Swedish soldier killed, two injured in Afghan violence

2010-10-17 10:43:54 GMT+7 (ICT)

STOCKHOLM (BNO NEWS) -- A Swedish soldier was killed and two others were wounded on Saturday in northern Afghanistan when the vehicle in which they were traveling was hit by an improvised explosive device, officials said.

In a statement, the Swedish Defense Ministry said the soldiers were called to reinforce the area after a skirmish with suspected insurgents near of Mazar-i-Sharif when the explosion occurred.

The soldiers injured are not in serious condition, the ministry added.

So far, five Swedish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion started in 2001 in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The Swedish army has about 500 soldiers in the Asian country contributing to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Coalition casualties in Afghanistan have been rising sharply this year, with around 90 service members being killed in July alone. It was the deadliest month for U.S. forces since the war began on October 7, 2001.

So far this month, around 45 service members have been killed in incidents throughout Afghanistan, according to a BNO News tally. Most of the casualties were American and died in Afghanistan's war-torn southern region.
