Update:

North prepares for floods, landslides

TAK: -- The governor of Tak province Sunday warned local residents of possible flashfloods and mudslides following torrential daily rain.

"The rainfall is unusually high and a coming tropical storm will bring even more rain to our province," said Suwat Tanprawat.

He said there was a high risk of flashfloods and mudslides, especially in Umphang, Phop Phra, Mae Ramat, Tha Song Yang and Mae Sot districts, where heavy rain was falling on deforested areas. People living in lowlying areas along rivers and creeks are particularly at risk.

"If possible," he warned, "they should evacuate to safer places."

On Saturday, mudslides swept down hillsides in Umphang district leaving uprooted trees covering many parts of the UmphangPhop Phra road. The authorities warned motorists to be extremely careful while using the road.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said tropical storm Washi was moving over Vietnam and could bring heavy rain to Thailand's North and Northeast.

The department said people in floodprone areas of Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Mukdahan, Chiang Rai and Nan provinces were under threat of inundation.

It also warned small trawlers against going to sea.

FLASH-FLOODS: Tak residents given warning

TAK: -- The governor of Tak province yesterday warned local residents of possible flash-floods and mudslides following torrential daily rain.

“The rainfall is unusually high and a coming tropical storm will bring even more rain to our province,” said Suwat Tanprawat.

He said there was a high risk especially in Umphang, Phop Phra, Mae Ramat, Tha Song Yang and Mae Sot districts, where heavy rain was falling on deforested areas. People living in low-lying areas along rivers and creeks are particularly at risk.

“If possible,” he warned, “they should evacuate to safer places.”

Suwat said he had already told relevant agencies – including local administrative bodies and municipalities, kamnans and villages heads – to be alert and to warn local people of the risks.
