Car Parts In Lamphun/Chiang Mai

I love to do my own work on my car - I know i don't save much money, but I do know that the work is actually done, and done properly.

My problem is finding sources for parts and tools . Is there anywhere in Lamphun or Chiang Mai that has a good selection of parts / accessories and tools available. Many things I can buy from the dealer, but many things I can not -- or maybe they do not sell these things in Thailand. I am continually searching for the past few years.

I am looking for such things as: halogen headlight bulbs ( blue ?) ; feeler gauge for setting spark plug gap; axle jacks; articulated spark plug wrench: timing light: fog lamp kit ; manual transmission oil and molybdenum addtive for same; engine cleaner ( for adding to oil shortly before change ); hydraulic jack --and many more.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For Chaing Mai, there is a Large spare parts place owned by a friendly Thai guy (Dang), if you come up Mahidol rd towards central Airport there is a abandon SCB bank on the left and a Caltex on the right, opposite the Caltex is a soi, go in there, his work shop is on the left, they have everything from those plastic plugs you cant get out once are put in to car panels.

PM me if you need more directions.

I believe the most well-stocked place in town is Ruangrat or Roongrat (perhaps Loong Rat?). Any way it is a huge junkyard. Coming from Borsang towards the Superhighway, pass the soi to the Oriental Dhara Dhevi, and turn left into the next soi where you see a large red sign and many forklifts. If they don't have the part you are looking for there, they can order it from their junkyard in Bangkok. Very well organized, large staff, and all used parts are tested!

Quite often its cheaper to find a wrecker in Bangkok and get the parts sent up on the bus or courier, I found a front bumper in Chiang Mai was 13,000 baht but 9,000 baht in Bangkok plus 300 baht freight.

For tools there is a few shops on Kaeo Narawat Rd coming up from the superhighway both along the left and right, one on the left about half way up has a lot of tools etc.

This place is called Dang Pratoo because they started by specialising in doors (and windows). They do a lot of very good quality bodywork but not painting, also interiors, dashboards etc.. Not cheap by Thai standards, but very willing, quick and efficient. Air con tv lounge with free coffee hidden round the back now, too!

I'd say it is the last real soi going off on the left before (150m before) the slip road down to the Hang Dong Rd traffic lights.

Your other recommendation, the huge warehouse with the fork trucks and golf buggies outside, is also spot on. Almost all the stuff here is brought in from Japan, including whole (!) half cars which have been in huge accidents, all ready to be re-built (badly or well?!) and re-sold to us by some back street cowboy. I should add that Mercedes and BMW parts are among those coming from Japan.

There is a similar place on Super highway, same side as Lanna Hospital and just before it, specialising in small to heavy trucks. All parts from Japan.

The only scrap yard (westerners might recognise as such) that I've ever found here is on the left of the new Sankampaeng Rd as you come into the city, almost opposite Big C. At present they seem to be specialising in pick ups but the store at the back has a selection of small parts and trim.

Good luck.

Thanks so much to all of you for your valuable information -- all the roads are now open again in Amphoe Ban Hong -- I will be able to head for Chiang Mai and check out each of these places, especially the trolley jack at Tesco. I had dreams of finding something like A1MotorStore in UK, or Canadian Tire in Canada or Auto Zone in USA ( all of which I have used in the past ) -- but dreams are dreams and this is Thailand. Once again -- thank you !
