Gunmen kill 13 at northwestern Mexico rehab center

TIJUANA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Suspected drug cartel members burst into a drug rehabilitation center in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana on Sunday night, killing at least 13 people, local media reported.

According to preliminary information, gunmen arrived in several cars at the El Camino rehab center and grabbed several patients, lined them up execution-style and opened fire.

The latest massacre in Mexico's war on drugs mirrors Friday's bloody carnage in Ciudad Juarez, when 14 people were killed by gunmen that stormed a house where a birthday party was in full swing.

Drug rehabilitation center in Mexico have been the target of previous attacks. Locals and federal officials have said the centers are targeted by drug cartels because they are used by individuals as a refuge from rival gang members.

Some 25,000 people have died in drug-related violence after a military campaign against drug cartels was launched by President Felipe Calderon at the end of 2006.
