At least 14 killed, several injured in Myanmar oil pipeline explosion

2010-10-25 19:25:31 GMT+7 (ICT)

YANGON, MYANMAR (BNO NEWS) -- At least 14 people were killed and around 80 were wounded in the central region of Myanmar after an oil leak from a pipeline caught on fire and exploded, local authorities said Monday.

According to a witness, a local villager in the town of Pakokku, located in the region of Magway, lit a match to see how much oil had been collected by the large group in the pipeline leak on Sunday evening, but it accidentally caused the fire.

The explosion reportedly lifted people off the ground as oil spread out in the area. The injured were rushed to local hospitals and clinics to be treated mostly for burns as the number of casualties could possibly rise.

According to officials, the state-owned pipeline was shut down after the explosion. Myanmar enjoys vast natural resources, including those of natural gas and oil.
